Just over a year after an internal investigation cleared the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of pro-China bias, senior officials at the organisation decried a "frustrating" increase in political interference.

"When I started, about 20 per cent of my work was politics," Gunter Younger, director of Intelligence and Investigations at WADA, told AFP.

Now, he claims 80 per cent of his work has become political.

"It's quite frustrating," he adds.

"We spend so much time on politics instead of doing what we are supposed to do."

However, Younger warned: "We are not afraid of any country in the world."

His remarks come just over a year after the agency was rocked by a scandal involving 23 Chinese swimmers, who were cleared of doping after testing positive for the same banned heart drug in 2021.

Chinese investigators cleared the swimmers – some of whom went on to win Olympic gold in Tokyo that year – of wrongdoing, claiming the athletes had been exposed to the drug via a contaminated hotel kitchen.

WADA opted not to independently investigate the matter, sparking controversy, especially with the United States and its own anti-doping organisation, USADA.

Following WADA's decision, the United States government withdrew $3.6 million in funding, resulting in the removal of US representatives from its executive committee.

USADA CEO and arch WADA critic Travis Tygart defended the decision, arguing last May "the agency charged with keeping sports doping-free now seems vulnerable to manipulation by malign states."

The decision also drew criticism from several Olympic athletes, as well as scepticism from some antidoping experts.

But WADA defended its decision, citing a 2024 investigation by Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier, which absolved the organisation of wrongdoing, despite finding Chinese officials had violated established rules in the way they handled the case.

The organisation claims that geopolitical motivations are at fault for the fallout.

WADA's president, Witold Banka, told AFP the incident was "used as a war between two powers (China and the USA)."

"We were in the middle of it all," said the 41-year-old Pole, who has been president since 2019.

The Chinese case brought to light a growing issue in the anti-doping field regarding contamination, or cases where the athletes themselves are not at fault for what is found in their system.

However, as doping becomes more sophisticated, officials argue that determining whether something truly can be considered contamination can also become more difficult.

Following the Chinese case, WADA set up earlier this year a new working group on contamination.

A two-thirds majority in the German city of Munich voted in favour of a bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2036, 2040 or 2044 in a referendum on Sunday.

Final results showed 66.4 per cent of voters in the Bavarian capital voted in favour of the proposal.

"Munich clearly voted yes," city mayor Dieter Reiter said in a statement on Sunday.

Joerg Ammon, the President of the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV), celebrated the "dream result".

With 42 per cent of Munich's 1.1 million eligible voters taking part, the turnout was the highest for a referendum in the city's history.

The previous participation record was 37.5 per cent, recorded in 2001 for a vote on building the Allianz Arena, home to German football champions Bayern Munich and host of the 2012 and 2025 Champions League finals.

Munich last hosted the Games in 1972. The Bavarian capital is one of four German regions developing a bid to host the Olympics and was the first to hold a vote to gauge support.

Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr region are also developing bids, with referenda to be held in 2026.

The German candidate will be selected by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) late in 2026 before being submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

After Sunday's vote, Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder said "we will now flood the DOSB with our arguments".

Voter willingness to host the Olympics has dwindled in many European cities in recent decades, due largely to concerns over cost.

An estimated 6.7 million euros was spent on Sunday's referendum alone, with 1.8 million of that going to an information campaign.

The previous seven German bids to host the Summer or Winter Olympics games failed due to popular opposition.

In 2013, Munich voters narrowly rejected a proposal to bid to host the 2022 Winter Games, with only 28.9 per cent of eligible voters taking part.

Munich and Berlin are the German cities to have hosted the Summer Olympics.

Los Angeles will host the next edition in 2028 before Australian city Brisbane takes over in 2032.

The International Olympic Committee urged international sports federations on Wednesday not to host any sports events in Indonesia after the country banned Israeli gymnasts from a world championship that is taking place there this month.

The IOC said it was also cutting off all discussions about any potential Olympic Games bid by Indonesia until the government provided assurances that all athletes, irrespective of nationality, would be eligible to compete there in future.

Indonesia has expressed an interest in hosting the 2036 summer Olympics.

Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, denied visas to Israeli gymnasts earlier this month amid an outcry over Israel's military offensive in Gaza, meaning they could not take part in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships that began last week in Jakarta.

The Israel Gymnastics Federation called Indonesia's decision shocking and heartbreaking.

Indonesia has no formal diplomatic ties with Israel.

I moved to Johannesburg from Cape Town in 1991 to join what was then essentially M-Net Supersport. In those very early days I worked for the division called Communication Technologies (ComTech) before the then SuperSport CEO Russell MacMillan headhunted me to host the SuperSport AM and Coast to Coast shows. 

Which sports do you enjoy watching and why?

I enjoy football, rugby, golf and horseracing, but I am drawn and captivated by the unpredictable nature of all live sport. The simple truth is that you just cannot script sport, and that fact alone keeps us all on the edge of our seats. 

SuperSport turns 30 this year. What was your sports highlight from the past 30 years?

Gosh. That is difficult to narrow down. I would have to say the emergence of the Springboks as the dominant force in World Rugby.

Share a personal highlight from your time at SuperSport?

I was personally blessed to be both the Presenter and the Executive Producer for one of Supersport’s most iconic magazine shows, Super Saturday. The original show ran for over a decade, during which time it won multiple SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards in the categories of Best Television Show and Best Television Presenter. The show’s popularity and success contributed to my receiving the humbling honour of being named the overall South African Sports Journalist of the Year. 

What’s your guilty viewing pleasure?

Live golf. When the likes of The Open, The Masters and the Ryder Cup are being broadcast, I literally clear my diary so as to try and not miss a single shot across all four days.

The Proteas Women kicked off their three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan on Monday (16 September), a crucial tune-up ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Motshidisi Mohono, and I’m a senior rugby anchor at SuperSport. 

Take us through your journey at SuperSport.

My journey has been such an interesting one. I came into SuperSport through the Lady Rugga presenter search, in 2011. It was such an extraordinary experience working with the greats here, and I just knew this is where I wanted to be. It’s been a whirlwind of a journey since, and I have realized so many dreams since.

Which sports do you enjoy watching and why?

Which sports don’t I love to watch?! LOL! I watch almost everything; rugby, cricket, formula 1, netball, tennis, football… I could spend all day in front of the television watching sport; I absolutely enjoy it. Rugby is my number one at the moment and it’s been a joy watching the Springboks and Springbok Women’s performances over the last few weeks.

SuperSport turns 30 this year. What was your sports highlight from the past 30 years? Share a personal highlight from your time at SuperSport?

My sporting highlights of the past three years would probably be the 2019 rugby World Cup victory. There are so many others hidden gems within the last 30 years, but that is the one that stands out for me the most.

It was the first time I anchored a Rugby World Cup Final in Studio; a personal milestone of reaching that feat, as well as watching our national team lift the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time in 12 years. It’s a memory etched into my heart forever.

It was a joyous and momentous occasion not only for myself, but for the Springboks and South Africa. I’ll always remember it.

What’s your guilty viewing pleasure?

My guilty viewing pleasure? Right now, it would be watching Inimba. It’s a brand new telenovela on Mzansi Magic, and I am enthralled by it. It has a wonderful cast bringing a great story to life, and in such an authentic way!

I really enjoy watching it. That’s one of my guilty pleasures. Outside of that, I love a good sports documentary. I haven’t had time to watch one in a while, but that is really my vibe.

Looking at all the sport happening in September – what will you be watching?

There is so much sport on the go in September. You must take ownership of the remote in your home, otherwise you’re gonna miss out on so much. Thank goodness for DStv Stream, and Catch Up!

I’m looking forward to seeing the knockout stages of the Women’s Rugby World Cup. Who is going to clinch that title? There are a few contenders, and it’s great to see the Springbok Women also adding their name that list, having qualified for the quarterfinals.

I’m also looking forward to seeing our Spar Proteas in action against New Zealand; it’ll be good to see just how we measure up against one of the best sides in the world at the moment.

Champions Leagues returns, there’s Formula 1 action, MTN 8 action…

On Thursday, 7 August, the studio, by mid-morning, felt like warm velvet. Sunlight spilt through the blinds, dust motes danced in the air, and R&B and soul rolled out of the speakers in slow, syrupy waves.

People softened at the edges, makeup brushes moved slower, conversations lingered longer, shoulders loosened.

By nightfall, the soundtrack had shifted. Amapiano basslines pulsed through the floor, three-step rhythms coaxed quiet head nods from the crew, and the air had that late-shoot electricity where tiredness meets adrenaline. It was the first-ever Nounouche × SuperSport cover for Women’s Month, stamped with #HereForHer and fronted by three women wearing it like it was made for them, because in more ways than one, it was.

The perfect way to celebrate women’s month as the broadcaster celebrates 30 years in the game.

TWO LOOKS, ONE TRUTH

We gave them two looks because that’s their reality. The formal fit had boardroom bite – sharp lines, clean confidence, the kind of polish that walks into a room and resets the temperature without raising its voice. The laid-back look was pure honesty, sport-luxe ease, off-duty cool, the “I know who I am” energy you can’t fake.

Watching them switch from one to the other never felt like costume changes. It felt like code-switching – not in the performative sense, but as language. Fashion speaking fluently.

THE WOMEN BEHIND THE FRAMES

Simangele “Smash” Hadebe isn’t just a name you hear in boxing circles – she’s the name. The reigning South African women’s flyweight champion has built a career on clean footwork, sharp jabs, and an unshakable refusal to be underestimated.

She grew up in Kwa-Thema, Springs, finding her way into a boxing gym at a time when girls weren’t expected to lace up gloves.

Boxing became more than a sport; it was a language for survival. Her induction as the first honouree of SuperSport’s second cohort of Real World Champions, an initiative that celebrates ordinary South African doing extraordinary things across various sporting codes, is a no brainer.

When we sat down, Smash’s hands rested loosely in her lap, but her words landed with the weight of someone who’s fought for every inch of ground she stands on.

“I found my voice in boxing,” she said. “Round by round, I learned to speak up. This sport became how I address what I survived. It’s not just punches; it’s power to say the things I couldn’t say when I was younger.”

The room stilled for a beat, as if even the speakers were listening. In that stillness, you could feel the other truth she was naming: the right to be soft after you’ve fought to be safe.

Lerato Phago leaned in like a friend telling you a secret at a party. A sports broadcaster and storyteller, she’s one of the emerging voices shaping how women’s sport is narrated in South Africa. To her, commentary isn’t just filling silence between plays, it’s weaving the context that makes a moment matter.

“I’m a storyteller more than anything,” she said. “Sport connects people through the storylines – why we show up, who we become under pressure, the communities that hold us. The score is a chapter; the story is the book.”

She wasn’t performing insight; she was unpacking it. And there was softness in that too, the refusal to rush past the human parts.

Then there’s Amanda Dlamini – the former captain of Banyana Banyana, a midfielder with vision sharper than any camera lens, and now a football analyst who’s made the often male-dominated pundit’s desk feel just a little more human. Amanda played over 100 international games for South Africa, led her team at the 2012 London Olympics, and has become a voice for gender equity in sport.

She started with a small smile, the kind that reads like both an introduction and a punctuation mark.

“For the longest time, I was always moving to the next goal,” she said. “Now I’m teaching myself to pause, to acknowledge what I’ve done, and to recognise the work it took to get here. Naming your wins is part of growing.”

It landed like advice and permission in one breath, ambition with room to exhale.

LEGACY AS A PRACTICE

We talked about legacy, not as a headline, but as something you do in the dark, when nobody’s filming. They all said versions of the same truth: yes, they’ve broken barriers, but they also had people who cleared paths before them. And now, that’s the assignment, to widen the road for the girls coming up next.

Use the platform. Make the calls. Share the contacts. Hire the next one. Put women everywhere in the ecosystem, on camera and behind it, in edit bays and control rooms, as managers, writers, producers, decision-makers. Not just featured but resourced. Not just present but paid.

THE ENERGY THAT STAYS

By the time we wrapped, the air smelled like hairspray and possibility. The crew swayed between takes, cameras clicking in rhythm with the music. The final frames had that afterglow only good energy leaves behind. This cover isn’t just pretty — it’s proof.

Proof that Women’s Month can be more than a caption. Proof that #HereForHer is a structure, not a slogan – a commitment and not just a campaign. Proof that soft power, glow, grit, and a little two-step can move a culture forward.

If you ask me what stays with me, it’s this: Smash speaking power into old silence, Lerato reminding us that the story is the bridge and Amanda giving herself the credit she’s earned and inviting the rest of us to do the same.

And maybe that’s what Women’s Month should always be, not just a photo on a cover, but a room full of women who know the fight, who’ve earned the glow, and who keep the door wide open behind them.

All eyes will be on the Springboks this weekend as they start their Rugby Championship journey against long-time adversaries, Australia. Following an intensive conditioning camp, the Boks are prepared for a physical and tactical showdown.

The first match against the Wallabies takes place at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 16 August, where the Boks will be determined to start their championship defence with a winning performance in front of a home crowd.

The Rugby Championship is the annual international series featuring New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, and Argentina, and every point matters.

The Boks will follow up this home fixture with a second test against Australia in Cape Town on 23 August, before heading to New Zealand for back-to-back tests, with all the action live on SuperSport. We also have plenty of Currie Cup action in store this weekend too on Your World of Champions.

Shifting from the scrum to the octagon, South African UFC champion Dricus du Plessis faces arguably the toughest challenge of his career.

In the main event of UFC 319 in Chicago, Stillknocks is set to defend his UFC world middleweight title against the undefeated Russian fighter, Khamzat Chimaev.

This highly anticipated bout, Du Plessis's first since his unanimous decision win over Sean Strickland in February, will be broadcast on SuperSport Action and Maximo 1 in the early hours of Sunday, 17 August.

The on-field rivalry with Australia continues on the cricket pitch.

The Proteas levelled the T20I series against Australia this week, setting the stage for a winner-takes-all finale on the weekend.

A victory in the third and final match would not only secure a series win for the Proteas but could also contribute to a historic "double green and gold blow" against Australia, with the Springboks also in action.

The team is focused on clinching the series, capitalising on this unique opportunity to achieve dual victories over their rivals in both cricket and rugby. Fans can watch all the action live on SuperSport.

But that’s not all.

We have plenty more action in store, especially for football fans. The thrilling MTN8 semifinals kick off this weekend, with a titanic first-leg clash between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns on 16 August, at Orlando Stadium.

The Buccaneers know they must get a positive result to take to Lucas Moripe Stadium for the second leg.

“Women make up a significant portion of the gaming community, yet their presence on the professional stage remains disproportionately small,” Wright says. “It is not because of a lack of talent – it’s a lack of visibility, resources, and pathways to compete at the highest level. Until we bridge those gaps, we’re leaving potential on the table.”

In an industry where opportunity often begins with access – to tournaments, to training, to mentorship – Wright believes brands have a critical role to play.

Red Bull’s investment in gaming is a case in point. Through events like Red Bull Tetris, which celebrates speed, strategy, and creativity, and a major presence at Comic Con Africa as an example, the brand is building platforms where all players can test themselves, gain exposure, and grow their careers.

“It’s about normalising diversity on the stage,” Wright adds. “When women compete in the same arenas, under the same conditions, and get the same coverage, the narrative shifts. That’s when the next generation starts to believe there’s a place for them here.”

Wright’s own journey – from passionate gamer to international esports host – is proof of what’s possible when support and opportunity align. But she is quick to point out that her story shouldn’t be the exception.

“We need more entry points,” she says. “Not everyone has the resources to travel, train, or network their way into the industry. That’s why accessible events, community programmes, and brand-backed initiatives matter – they lower the barriers to entry and keep talent in the pipeline.”

With Red Bull Tetris and Comic Con Africa set to engage thousands of fans and players this year, Wright sees 2025 as a chance to raise both performance and participation.

“The future of gaming is diverse – not because it should be, but because it already is. Our job is to make sure the stage reflects the reality of the community.”

Aspiring broadcasters can kick off their journey in two exciting ways. The most accessible path is through online entry at supersport.com/mvptalentsearch.

Here, you'll complete a quick registration form, then dive into a curated selection of iconic sporting moments on the MVP Talent Search website for inspiration.

Your task is to record a unique, 45-second audition clip, bringing your energy, insights, or commentary style to life. Perfect your submission before uploading it via on the entry form. Entries for the online search close on 1 September 2025, so don't miss your shot to shine.

IN PERSON

For those who thrive in the spotlight, SuperSport's mobile studio is hitting major university campuses across South Africa for live, in-person auditions.

This offers an optimal setting to record your audition and feel the palpable energy of the search. Simply arrive at the audition space, consent to the event's terms and conditions, and our friendly Brand Ambassadors will guide you.

You'll register via an iPad, provide your details, agree to the terms, and choose your preferred sport from soccer, rugby, cricket, or netball. Then, step into our mobile studio to deliver your 45-second audition based on a 15-30 second clip of your chosen sport, with a maximum of two takes.

SuperSport is on the hunt for talent that embodies exceptional communication skills, including active listening, fluid verbal expression, and great facilitation of conversations.

Crucially, candidates must possess deep sports knowledge, demonstrated through real-time analysis, broad multi-sport general knowledge, and familiarity with teams and players.

An undeniable on-air presence is key, requiring an engaging personality, professionalism, confidence, and the ability to research, multitask, and entertain.

Beyond the screen, SuperSport values team players who are punctual, flexible, genuinely passionate about sports, and can build rapport effortlessly. Essential skills also include crisis management, composure under pressure, natural charisma, and a thirst for knowledge as an avid reader.

THE ROAD TO BECOMING SUPERSPORT’S NEXT MVP

The search will span across various South African provinces and all social media platforms, offering hopefuls myriad opportunities to audition both through our mobile studio and via online entries.

From thousands of hopefuls, the Top 20 Draft will emerge, with these elite talents being flown to Johannesburg to enter the exhilarating world of SuperSport headquarters. Here, they'll face high-pressure, real-world presenting and commentary challenges, both in the studio and out in the field.

The journey continues at the intensive SuperSport Draft Camp, where over several weeks, these rising stars will undergo rigorous media drills and broadcast challenges. They'll tackle everything from hot debates and vox pop relays to post-match wrap-ups and live Q&A sessions.

This intense training is designed to hone their on-camera confidence, deepen their sports knowledge, sharpen their quick thinking and natural improvisation, develop their interviewing skills, and cultivate an engaging, relatable personality with strong digital platform influence, social media instinct, live field reporting abilities, crowd control, and leadership in the studio – all fuelled by unmatched energy and charisma.

Ultimately, the goal is to draft 10-member SuperSport MVP Squad. In a thrilling live finale, only one exceptional presenter will be chosen to wear the coveted SuperSport badge as the 2025 SuperSport MVP. The MVP will be revealed as the fresh voice of a new generation, ready to own the mic and represent the brand across Africa and the world.
