The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) announced late on Tuesday it was planning to bid to host the 2035 World Cup as it holds conversations with the sport's governing body.
World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin is visiting the country, which aims to organise the first World Cup in South America.
The UAR said it would look at involving nations from across the continent including Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.
"The 2035 bid represents a federal objective and a legacy project that transcends our borders," UAR president Gabriel Travaglini said in a statement.
"Welcoming Alan Gilpin to advance this technical analysis is a fundamental step in demonstrating that the region is ready.
"We want a World Cup that reflects the passion and development that rugby has achieved in every corner of our territory," he added.
Japan have also stated their intention of bidding for the event, having organised the 2019 World Cup.
The next edition of the competition will take place in Australia next year with the United States hosting the tournament in 2031.
