The South African women’s hockey team reaffirmed their continental dominance with a 4–0 victory over Ghana in the final of the 2025 African Hockey Cup of Nations in Ismailia on Saturday, claiming their eighth consecutive title and sealing qualification for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Facing a familiar rival in Ghana, whom they narrowly defeated 3-2 during the group stages, South Africa delivered a composed, clinical and commanding performance when it mattered most.

It was the perfect start for the defending champions, as Jean-Leigh du Toit fired home a blistering drag flick from a penalty corner inside the opening minutes to give her side an early lead.

Barely two minutes later, Kayla de Waal added the finishing touch to a deflected ball in front of goal, doubling the advantage and capping off a dream opening five minutes for the South Africans.

RELENTLESS PRESSURE

South Africa’s dominance continued as they dictated possession, tempo, and territory.

Their relentless pressure paid dividends late in the second quarter when a sustained spell of penalty corners eventually saw Du Toit sweep home her second of the final, extending the lead to 4-0 by halftime after Hannah Pearce had earlier struck from another well-executed set piece.

With a commanding cushion, the second half saw the South Africans continue to control proceedings with trademark composure.

Their defensive structure remained impenetrable, while the midfield trio dictated rhythm and tempo.

Despite earning further penalty corners and opportunities, the scoreboard remained unchanged as the clock wound down.

When the final whistle blew, it signalled yet another golden chapter in South African hockey history, an eighth successive African crown and a sixth consecutive final triumph over Ghana, underlining the team’s enduring excellence on the continental stage.

The victory also confirms South Africa’s place at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, as they continue to fly the flag proudly for African hockey on the global stage.

The SPAR And Tops at SPAR Indoor Hockey IPT 2025 reached its conclusion with new champions for the both the men and women’s A Section tournament.

It was title joy for Southern Gauteng men, breaking a five-year chokehold by Western Province, and the Western Province Women, ending a four-year hold by KZN Raiders.

MEN'S A SECTION: SOUTHERN GAUTEM CLAIM TITLE

Southern Gauteng had not won the title in this century and despite being hosts knew they would have it all to do against five-time defending champions Western Province.

They got it right from start to finish in a superb 6-2 victory to lift the title led by a superb performance from captain Dalpiarro Langford.

KZN Raiders overturned a 3-1 halftime deficit against Northern Blues to surge to a wonderful 6-3 win.

Tyler Tomsett scored the first and last goals for Raiders as they took home the bronze medal.

WP Peninsula were too good for the challenge of SG Witsies and ended as the highest ranked “B side” in the tournament.

They were 6-1 winners in a game they led from Dean Carrick's first- minute strike and never looked back.

KZN Mynahs secured their status as an A Section side while consigning Mpumalanga to relegation.

Mpumalanga led 1-0 at halftime, but three unanswered goals in the second half saw the Durban side avoid the drop.

WOMEN'S A SECION – VICTORY AT LAST FOR WP  

An incredibly tight final, which would always crown a new champion after the Raiders were defeated in the semifinal.

Southern Gauteng last won the title in 2019, while Western Province were looking for their first having lost in the final previously.

Thanks to Kayla de Waal’s 15th minute strike, it was Western Province who celebrated a first ever Indoor IPT title in the Women’s A section winning 1-0

Emily Macquet and Anja Tromp scored for Northern Blues as they shook off their semifinal disappointment to secure a bronze medal with a 2-0 win over KZN Raiders.

WP Peninsula saw an early Ruby Kraus brace set them on course for what was ultimately a comfortable 3-0 win over Mpumalanga.

 The victory means the women’s team emulate the men’s as the highest “B side” in the tournament.

North West led 3-1 thanks to a Tara Myburgh hat-trick.

But Hunziker from Witsies levelled and the relegation would be decided by a shootout.

After the three turns each it was still level, Keovaan Jansen from Witsies delivered the killer blow to relegate the North West ladies to ladies to the B Section.

Three superb days of action have culminated in the final day on Saturday in Johannesburg. Championships, relegations and promotions are all up for grabs on the last day of action at the SPAR & Tops at SPAR Indoor Hockey IPT 2025.

MEN’S A SECTION

Pool Stage

The pool stage was completed in the morning before attention turned to the semifinals in the evening.

Northern Blues secured their semifinal spot with a Richard Porter hat-trick inspired 7-4 win over SG Witsies

KZN Raiders also scored seven, which included a Tyler Tomsett hat-trick in a 7-2 win over Mpumalanga and a confirmed Semi-Final appearance

Western Province did enough to defeat their “B Side” WP Peninsula 4-2, having trailed 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining to secure top spot in their pool.

Southern Gauteng continued their fine form, beating KZN Mynahs 6-1with another three goals scored by Liam Hermanus

5-8 Playoffs

SG Witsies maintained their A Section status by defeating Mpumalanga in their playoff. After a thrilling 4-4 draw, the game went to a shootout where Witsies won 2-0 as Byron Comley scored the winner.

WP Peninsula will also maintain their place in the A Section in 2026 as they defeated the KZN Mynahs 7-3. Dean Carrick was on fire netting four times for Pens in a comfortable victory

Semi Finals

Southern Gauteng were too good for Northern Blues. Ryan Mann helped inspire his team to a big 5-0 win and a place in the final of the 2025 SPAR & Tops at SPAR Indoor IPT.

Western Province will have the opportunity to defend their crown as they defeated the KZN Raiders 4-3. Hans Neethling’s hat-trick made it 4-1 before a nervy finish, but the holders will have the chance to lift the title again on Saturday.

WOMEN’S A SECTION

5-8 Playoffs

WP Peninsula and North West could not be separated after a 2-2 draw. Pens had led

2-0 before being pegged back. Peninsula would hold their nerve to win the shootout 2-0.

SG Witsies levelled their match with a final minute strike by Siliziwe Mxinwa to draw with Mpumalanga. However, the lowveld side triumphed in the shootout scoring the only goal through Gia Henning.

Semi Finals

Southern Gauteng produced an incredible fightback to score twice through Paris-Gail Isaacs in the final minute against Northern Blues to earne an incredible 3-3 draw. Southerns however struck in the shootout with Sarah Paget starring to send the hosts to the final.

Western Province eliminated the defending champions KZN Raiders in a big victory. Kayla de Waal scored a hat-trick, while a brace from Malikah Hamza made it 6-0 to confirm a new champion in 2025.

The South African indoor hockey men, powered by tops at SPAR, secured their first medal in history as they defeated Belgium 6-5 in the bronze medal match of the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in Porec on Sunday.

South Africa had a chance early but Cassiem’s instinctive shot went over the crossbar. Belgium profited from the missed chance as they charged up the other end and found the back of the net from Phillipe Simar, who was given too much space at the back post. Cassiem forced a high turnover, but his reactive shot was saved well by Henet.

Despite a few half chances the South Africans were unable to find a goal and the opening quarter ended with the Europeans leading 1-0.

Early in the second quarter Belgium were awarded a penalty corner and Phillipe Simar doubled the lead. South Africa were awarded a route back into the game with a penalty corner and Cassiem fired it low past the foot of Henet to half the deficit to 2-1. 

The African’s were quickly awarded another and this time Cassiems shot went narrowly wide.

Cullin de Jager made a good save to stop a counter attack threat from Belgium as South Africa tried to find the equaliser. They found it when Cassiem found the ball in the circle and turned to fire low and restore parity. 

Dayaan joined the party and gave South Africa a lead when he fired into the roof from a tight angle on the reverse stick.

The Africans faced a late penalty corner and Cullin De Jager made the save to earn South Africa a halftime lead.

Early in the second half Belgium had a penalty corner. Anton van Loggerenberg was beaten but Dayaan Cassiem was on hand to save it off the line.

South Africa then won a penalty corner which saw Cassiem’s shot strike the defender on the line for a penalty stroke. Hans Neethling was on hand to fire home and double the lead to 4-2.

Belgium pulled one back through Max Langer from a penalty corner with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Dalpiarro Langford saw his shot saved before Dayaan Cassiems deflected effort bounced off the top of the crossbar. South Africa had a late chance but it was saved and they led 4-3 with 10 minutes to play.

Mustapha Cassiem completed the hat-trick with a brilliant drag from the right in the opening minute of the final quarter when given space, 5-3. Another shot from Mustapha was saved before Hans Neethling was in the way for Dayaan Cassiem.

Belgium were getting stretched and the Africans exploited it when Dayaan Cassiem fired it low past Henet to stretch the lead.

Belgium pulled their keeper off with four minutes remaining and won a penalty corner but Litha Kraai and Cullin De Jager combined to clear the lines. Gaethon Dykmans pulled back from a penalty corner to make it 6-4 with 3 and a half minutes remaining.

De Jager made a huge save with 90 seconds to keep the gap at two. Max Langer scored a sensational goal to half the deficit as South Africa were guilty of trying to force play.

Jethro Eustice cleared off the line and South Africa had secured a first ever World Cup medal.

The South African Indoor Hockey Men, powered Tops at SPAR, created history in Croatia on Friday as they produced a perfect performance to defeat World number 2 Iran 6-0 and secure a historic first semifinal in any FIH World Cup.

South Africa started the game with the news that Justin Domleo, their most experienced player, was out for the remainder of the tournament with an injury.

The team were almost spurred on to make sure that they won the game for their man.

From the first whistle to the last the South African defensive effort was sensational, marshalled by Jethro Eustice and supported tremendously by Rusten Abrahams, Keegan Hezlett and Leruo Ditlhakanyane.

South Africa opened the scoring through Mustpaha Cassiem with another excellently executed penalty corner that gave Hataminejad no chance in goals.

South Africa then earned a penalty stroke when Litha Kraai was pulled down in the circle.

Surprisingly Cassiem was unable to hit the target despite sending the big keeper the wrong way and it remained 1-0.

The South Africans came out with renewed vigour in the second half and duly delivered on their goal-scoring threat.

Cassiem earned his second with a slightly different execution at the penalty corner but with the same net result.

Cassiem then turned provider for Dalpiarro Langford as Iran failed to cope with the South African precision.

In the second half Langford earned a second for himself and Litha Kraai made it 5-0 with what is becoming his characteristic goal on the reverse flick.

There was time for Cassiem to complete his hat-trick while the South African goalkeepers were given very little work as a clean sheet was secured and history was made.

South Africa now face Germany in the semifinals knowing they have already secured their best ever finish at an FIH World Cup.

The seventh edition of the FIH Indoor World Cup kicks off in Croatia on Monday with Africa’s biggest broadcaster poised to broadcast the game for hockey-lovers continent-wide.

Known as one of the most electrifying events in the sport due to fast-paced and skillful players who offer non-stop action-packed matches, the FIH Indoor World Cup is a must-watch for any sports fanatic.
 
African hopes will lay firmly in the hands of South Africa and Namibia. Both nations will have their men’s and women’s teams not just participating but competing.
 
South Africa open their tournament when the women’s team face Thailand at 12:50pm, while the men face Croatia at 9:50pm on the opening day.

SuperSport will show all the matches live on SuperSport Variety 2 (DStv Channel 207) in SA and SuperSport Africa 2 and Action Africa in the Rest of Africa.

The format of this year's tournament is the same as the Rugby 7s at the Paris Olympics.

Three (3) groups of four (4) countries with the top two in each group plus the two best third-placed teams going through to the quarterfinals.

There is an added incentive as a top six finish for an African team earns the continent an additional spot at the 2029 Indoor World Cup.

The South African women’s team boasts Olympians, Kayla de Waal and Edith Molikoe.

Led by captain Jamie Southgate, the team come into the tournament ranked 6^th in the world with Southgate’s experience integral to their success.
 
As the third most capped player in South African hockey history, having recently played her 100^th game, she and her teammates will be hoping the highs of such a monumental achievement invigorate the team to success.
 
The 8^th world-ranked South African men’s team is led by captain Dayaan Cassiem, alongside his headline-grabbing younger brother Mustapha. 

Lauded for his pace, skill and mesmeric style of play, Dayaan is the perfect foil for the goal-scoring machine that is Mustapha.

The latter enters this tournament as the reigning World Junior Player of the Tournament from the last edition and has already notched up 101 goals in just 41 matches!
 
The experience of Justin Domleo will also play a vital role if the trophy is to make its way onto African soil as this edition in Croatia marks his fourth World Cup as he continues to break records as the country’s all-time capped leader in the men’s side.

One of the biggest positives to take from South African men's hockey in 2024 is the South African under-21 team being crowned senior provincial champions.

It is hard to remember when last, if ever, the South African under-21-side won the senior tournament.

They also won the Provincial Under-21 Tournament.

This is exciting. With the proper management and guidance, these youngsters got the makings to become one of the best South African hockey teams to compete at the Olympic Games over the next eight years.

When talking to Tuks' Jamie Seale, who plays for the South African Under-21-side, it becomes clear why the team has been such a formidable force in 2024 in local hockey.

Seale's dad was himself an avid hockey player in his younger days.

"The most important thing my dad taught me is that the moment I step onto the Astroturf, I should remember that no player is better than me. I play with that mindset every time I am on the field. I was not the only one to do so during the provincial tournament. We really backed ourselves to win every time we played.

"Credit should also go to our coach, Guy Elliot. During the final against Southern Gauteng, he kept reminding us that if we stuck to the game plan, we would make sports history. That served as extra motivation to all of us."

The Tuks player plays as a midfielder. For the South African under-21-side, he played as an outside midfielder.

Asked to brag about his best traits as a player, Seale said his aim was to make things happen on the Astroturf.

"I back myself on my speed, stickwork and dribbling skills. I can 'eliminate' several players with the ball on the stick. In doing so, I create opportunities that can impact the outcome of any game. Having the ability to read the game, I am often in the right place at the right time to score a goal."

SHOUT OUT TO FOURIE

Getting back to 2024 and Tuks Hockey Tegan Fourie's leadership qualities deserve a shout out. 

She captained Tuks' women to win the USSA Tournament. She was also co-captain of the Northerns Blues, who won the senior provincial tournament.

Fourie does not believe in complicating things as captain. For her, it is all about leading by example.

" I play with the mindset of the team first. Playing as a midfielder, I realise that I need to stay composed. Distribution is a big part of my game. I always want to set up an attacking platform for the team. This is my third year as captain for Tuks. In time, I realised the importance of being able to communicate with my teammates during a game. I am constantly encouraging and guiding my teammates during a game."

Team SA has withdrawn both its men’s and women’s hockey teams from the 13th African Games currently under way in Accra, Ghana, based on recommendations and guidelines as set down by the International Hockey Federation.

The decision was taken as a result of the venue not being sufficiently prepared to stage the competition. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) and African Hockey Federation have been informed of the decision taken by Team SA.

Despite repeated assurances that the pitches would be ready for international standard competition, the pitches are unsuitable. In correspondence sent to the LOC, Team SA team leader Patience Shikwambana stated: “Over and above making this decision, our SA Hockey Federation consulted with Sports Flooring Warehouse, a South African-based specialist in carpet laying, and an FIH-recognised service provider. They have also advised us – having analysed the images we shared with them – that the field is not satisfactory and may cause harm to the athletes.

Shikwambana also noted: “The rescheduling of the hockey competition, on three numerous occasions has, in addition, caused an inconvenience to us logistically, as a team, where we had to arrange for both the teams to fly to Ghana in time for the commencement of the competition.

“In the first Chef De Missions’ site visit meeting at the end of October 2023, we were advised that there would be test events to ensure the readiness of venues before the start of each competition. This, unfortunately, has not been the case for Hockey.

In addition, according to the FIH field certification guideline: 'If a field that is not certified is being considered as a tournament venue, it should be tested at the earliest convenience to demonstrate compliance with this specification.'

“These tests should be conducted months in advance before a competition – which, in this case, have not taken place. Furthermore, ‘The FIH has a number of accredited test institutes, and these have accredited engineers located around the world’, which we are not certain if they have been involved and provided the necessary certification."

Team SA have already qualified both men’s and women’s hockey teams for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and with the African Games being held in close proximity to Paris, it was deemed a potential injury risk if Team SA competed under the circumstances in Accra. Shikwambana thanked the LOC for their understanding and pledged to continue supporting the LOC in advancing these Games for the benefit of the African Union, the LOC and the athletes.

South Africa's men's hockey team qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after beating Egypt 2-1 in a tense final on Sunday.

Egypt were victorious in the two previous meetings between the two countries at the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia and fancied themselves to cause an upset in front of a full house in Pretoria.

The two teams, who have contested every African final this millennium are both ranked in the top 20 in the FIH World Rankings and were determined to seal a spot at the Olympic Games.

Before the game started the South Africans recognised the milestone achievements of both Sam Mvimbi (50 caps) and Dan Bell (100 caps).

They celebrated those milestones in the best way possible when Matt Guise-Brown fired home his 11^th goal of the tournament from a penalty corner to give the hosts the early lead.

They were disappointed though to only hold the lead for 120 seconds as Hossam Ghobran levelled matters with a fine reverse stick strike.

The game was building up to a crescendo as the emotions rose and Nic Spooner spent a few minutes in the bin.

Both teams had chances but were unable to convert and at the half time break the game was on a knife’s edge at 1-1.

South Africa thought they would take the lead when Matt Guise-Brown’s shot was saved superbly on the line.

It was then Gowan Jones turn to shine as he produced one of the best saves of the tournament to keep the score level.

Egypt did find the back of the net, but a South African referral saw the goal denied as a result of a foot.

The pressure in the final 15 minutes was intense and both teams thought there was a possible winner in their destiny.

South Africa were the ones to find the goal. Mustapha Cassiem was given a small pocket of space and fired in his shot, the ball was saved but as it fell across to Ryan Julius the goal was scored.

 Despite a lengthy referral the goal stood to the jubilation of the South Africans and the dismay of the Egyptians.

Egypt continued to fight back and almost levelled with a cross-bar strike that somehow stayed out.

But Egypt would find the back of the net once more with 40 seconds left but once again a foot in the circle saw the goal disallowed on referral and the South Africans held on to secure a place in Paris.

Ryan Julius, who scored the winning goal, shared his thoughts after the final:

“I can hardly remember the moment, but it’s definitely the greatest in a qualifier for me. I was in the right place at the right time and I couldn’t be happier. It was a sensational moment in front of a sensational crowd!”

A dominant South Africa's women's hockey thrashed Nigeria 9-0 on Sunday to book their spot at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

Early in the tournament teams had to endure cold and uncomfortable weather, but a perfect summer's day in Pretoria welcomed the two teams out for the final.

If the weather was perfect for hockey, the start was even better as Thati Zulu won an early penalty corner and Tarryn Lombard converted with a touch from a Quanita Bobbs effort.

A brilliant set up by Kristen Paton put Ntsopa Mokoena through but Martha Uko, who has been superb in this tournament, pulled off a great save.

There was not much she could do when Thati Zulu’s goal-bound effort was also diverted in by Lombard once again.

The South Africans made it 3-0 early in the second quarter when Jean-Leigh du Toit netted almost a trademark drag flick from a penalty corner as the Nigerian women appeared helpless to deny the South Africa. I

t was nearly four for South Africa when Thati Zulu struck the post as it felt like a matter of when the fourth goal would come and it did just minutes later as Zulu fed Bobbs who turned and struck it home sweetly.

Things got even better for the South Africans as they stormed into the half-time break with another two goals and a place at Paris all but confirmed.

That confirmation received further backing in the third quarter with a hat-trick completing deflection from Tarryn Lombard before Paris-Gail Isaacs scored her first international goal for the country getting on the rebound of her own shot to make it 8-0.

Kristen Paton added the final cherry on top of a brilliant cake as the South Africans wrapped up the victory 9-0, completing the tournament without conceding a goal.

Player of the match in the final Tarryn Lombard was delighted with her role in the victory:

“Scoring a goal in the final is stuff of dreams, let alone a hat-trick. I’m absolutely stoked with the performance. We are incredibly pleased to qualify for the Olympic Games, the hard work starts here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Hayley van Schoor and Thinama Qasana from Queenstown Girls’ High can look back on an exhilarating journey as they head into their final Spar Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge in Komani on May 21.

The pair, who are both in matric, have amassed nearly 100 caps between them. Van Schoor recently played her 50th game for the first team while Qasana has run out 44 times.

Between the two, they represent a sizeable chunk of experience for the GHS outfit and that will most definitely come in useful when they attempt to make it a hat-trick of titles in the East London Inland regional leg of the competition.

Both players started their journeys on the bench but recognise today how they have developed as individuals and players since then.

Qasana admitted that she had been almost overwhelmed by the occasion when she got her chance at the highest school level in Grade 10.

“Honestly, it was such a scary experience being a junior in a team consisting of mainly seniors,” said the 18-year-old. “But my selection came to mean a lot more than I could ever have imagined.

“Not only has it carried me through those moments of doubt, but the structure and routine it has provided me has been invaluable in my all-round growth.”

For her, the opportunity came at just the right time as she was on the brink of losing hope in her hockey future.

“I just started thinking that I wasn’t good enough.”

The centre-half’s fondest memory is turning out in the green colours of the Balmoral Primary U8 team for the first time and scoring the winning goal in the last minute.

Passion and dedication went hand-in-hand, she believed.

“As passionate as I was, I needed the dedication within me when times got tough.”

She described the SPAR Hockey Challenge as “one of the most exciting ways to spend a Sunday”.

“Being around so many other teams from different backgrounds really provides a sense of unity and I couldn’t be happier being part of that. The sportsmanship always stands out; despite the results the girls are always friendly off the field.”

Van Schoor, who plies her trade as a centre link, debuted for the first team as a 15-year-old in 2019.

“I will never forget my first game. I was on the bench and played the second half of a match at the Greg Beling Festival just before Covid hit us.”

She rated her 50th cap, which came against Clarendon, as the biggest moment of her career until now.

“It has been such an incredible opportunity to grow and develop as a hockey player,” added the 18-year-old, who honed her skills against her brother in the yard of their Komani home.

Her driving force is clearly the enjoyment of competing and therefore the tournament is close to her heart.

“I like to encourage my teammates to have fun on the field and to play the game we all love to the best of our abilities.”

York reclaimed their crown in the Southern Cape leg of the SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge after sweeping arch-rivals Outeniqua aside at Oakhill in Knysna on Saturday.

While these two schools have often had tightly contested matches in this competition, York took control from the start this time.

After scoring in the first minute of the final, York had an iron grip on the game that they never relinquished as they went on a scoring spree to win 4-0.

York set the tone for what was to come later in the day by also seeing off Outeniqua in their round-robin match.

In a tournament where the pressure never diminishes, York coach MJ Meyer said their modus operandi had been to manage their players during the round-robin fixtures.

“With the matches limited to 25 minutes the goal was to rotate the team regularly. Player management is key in the early part of the day, always keeping in mind that there is a chance of contesting the final.”

York’s strategy was to play “simple” hockey and to keep the ball moving.

“This was our aim throughout and it helped us to build momentum in the round-robin phase where we took four wins from four matches to secure our spot in the final.”

York, aka The Blocks, lost out in a penalty shootout to Outeniqua in the 2022 final and they were determined to right the wrongs of that day.

York clearly had the momentum during the final.

“We continued to move the ball well and were able to use our chances inside the circle,” said a happy Meyer.

By all accounts, the players loved the opportunity to compete in the SPAR Hockey Challenge.

“This annual challenge is a pleasure to play in and always delivers competitive hockey. This year was no different – it was another great day of hockey and we are extremely proud of our first-team girls,” said the coach.

He thanked Oakhill for hosting the tournament and the sponsors for a “wonderful day”.

The finalists have dominated the Southern Cape regional leg since the inaugural event in 2016. In that first final, York beat Oakhill before going on to defeat Outeniqua in three consecutive finals from 2017 to 2019.

After two years in the doldrums due to Covid, Outeniqua pulled one back last year by defeating York 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the two sides were level at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

South African Hockey has today announced the appointment of Cheslyn Gie as the Head Coach of the South African Hockey Men until the completion of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Gie served as the Interim head coach at the victorious FIH Nations Cup as well as at the FIH Hockey World Cup in India where the team finished 11th. His first and most immediate focus will be on guiding the team through a Road to Paris Qualification event in the aim of qualifying for the 2024 Olympics. The team will also compete in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup in the back end of the year.

Gie’s support staff and technical team will be finalized over the next month and will be communicated when completed.

Tegan Fourie played brilliantly for South Africa's women's team during the recent FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in Pretoria. In eight games, she scored five goals. It ranked her among the top goal scorers of the tournament.

"At the moment, I've got 51 caps to my name and scored either 54 or 55 goals. Apparently, only two other South African female players have scored more than 50 goals in international indoor hockey."

There is a good reason why the Tuks player is unsure about her goal tally. It is because she is a team player. She scores to help her team to win and not for personal glory. For this reason, the goal she scored against Belgium was special. It helped South Africa to progress to the World Cup semifinals.

"Winning our quarterfinal game was indescribable. A dream come true. Before the start of the tournament, we hoped to contest the quarterfinals. Beating Belgium meant we went one better. It has helped us improve our international ranking to be one of the top six teams in the world."

Fourie's got 13 caps playing for South Africa's outdoor hockey team. She has set her goal to try and be one of the players selected to represent South Africa at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

According to the Tuks player, she finds playing both game formats beneficial.

"I have been playing both formats from a young age. It means I have never struggled to adapt from indoor hockey to outdoor hockey or vice versa. They complement each other, which is nice. Playing indoors is undoubtedly more intense. So I have found that I am much faster when I play outdoors afterwards."

When the Tuks hockey captain dribbles the ball past opponents, most will not realise what a remarkable story she has to tell. It is one in which the words 'never quit' is spelt in capital letters.

Fourie was diagnosed as having type one diabetes when she was five. It could have meant an immediate end to playing hockey. But even at such a young age, Fourie somehow knew she would continue what she loved doing. That was playing hockey.

To her, life is living every day to its fullest. But she admits that it is not always easy.

"Some days can be challenging. Managing living with diabetes can be unpredictable... maybe unpredictable is the wrong word. It is just at times, what happens in one's body is hard to explain, which frustrates me. But there was never a time I wondered why I was 'dealt this card'."

24 teams representing 14 countries ventured to the southern tip of Africa, to a country renowned for its collection of wildlife. In the wild it is the strongest that survive and are ultimately the king of the bush. The Indoor hockey World Cup, presented by SPAR, was no different as the Austrian Men and Netherlands Women become the undisputed kings and queens of the court and more importantly the world.

The Austrian men had entered the tournament as favourites on the back of their European Championship title and cantered their way to the final. The unstoppable force though met an immovable object in the Dutch and an incredible final could not be separated until a penalty shootout decided the game with the Austrians defending their crown and remaining the undisputed champs of Indoor Hockey.

The Dutch women also arrived as the favourites in the absence of Germany, and they embraced it winning 8 out of 8 games in a sprint to the title. Donja Zwinkels inspired her country with performances that ranged from sublime to extraordinary as the Netherlands collected their third FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup.

The SPAR South African women captivated the nation in their march to the semi-finals. Although they were unable to win the bronze medal, they most definitely did win the hearts of the South African sporting family as their performance was one that was unprecedented by an African nation.

The SA Hockey Men, powered by Tops at SPAR, were arguably the most exciting team in the tournament. They played with purpose and confidence led by Jethro Eustice and Justin Domleo, while the Cassiem brothers along with Ryan Julius give the team a flair that is second to none.

The sixth indoor hockey world cup came, it saw, and it was conquered. And incredible event that may well and truly inspire the future generations and leave a legacy that will live long in the memory of African Hockey.

The SPAR South African Indoor Hockey side had captivated their fans throughout the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in a march to the semi-finals. They had a packed crowd at the Hearfelt Arena in their corner as they sought to sink the unsinkable ship in the Netherlands.

The South African women had returned to the World Cup having missed the 2018 edition and have shown the journey they have been on has been an incredible journey full of heart, courage and inspiration.

The juggernaut that is the Dutch though was near impossible to stop and they rocked their way to an early lead. Pam Imhof and a stroke from Lieke van Wijk earned the team a credible 2-0 lead.

Showing characteristic South African fight the hosts pulled a goal back through a superbly taken penalty corner from Danny de Oliviera. They were being spurred on by an incredible performance in goals by Cheree Greyvenstein.

The Dutch though continued to show their class and extended their lead to three goals with Donja Zwinkels scoring before another stroke stretched the lead.

South Africa pulled their keeper and continued to fight for a result but conceded two late goals to inflate the result. The team would not have long to lick their wounds as the bronze medal match takes place at 18:30 against a wounded Czech Republic.

The South African Indoor Hockey Men had already achieved their best-ever finish at an FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup by securing a Quarter Final spot. They however had loftier ambitions and took to the court in an attempt to emulate their female compatriots in qualifying for the Semi-Finals.

The Dutch though, heavily favoured, would have their own ideas and would produce a devastating and dominant Dutch first half to lead 5-0 at the half time break. They opened the scoring through captain Burkhart who fired past van Loggerenberg on the second attempt. Goals were added by a whipping finish from Wiegert Schut, a Joep Troost wonder goal and Bakker before Burkhart made it 5-0.

The South Africans however showed characteristic fight and pushed forward from the back pulling a goal back through Chad Futcher. The South Africans removed their keeper and almost immediately found a second through Dayaan Casseim with a powerful reverse stick finish. The Netherlands feeling outnumbered decided to remove their keeper and match the South Africans and it added to the spectacle.

South Africa won a stroke when Cassiem’s shot was saved on the line and Mustapha stood up confident to score from the stroke. Instead the best stroke save of the tournament was made low to deny the South African top scorer.

He wouldn’t be denied for long as he showed tenacity to find a second and the stadium started almost literally rocking under the vibrance of the crowd. But unfortunately as time ran out the Dutch added a final goal and the South African men bid farewell to a tournament in which they played a massive part in the lasting impact of the tournament.

For Netherlands the dream of repeating the 2015 success continues to live and breath as they Orange Army will next take on USA in the semi-finals.

The SPAR South African Indoor Hockey side continued their historic run at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup on Friday night as a capacity crowd watched them defeat Belgium 2-1 to secure the first World Cup semi-final for any African nation.

South Africa began the day by celebrating Jess Lardant reaching the milestone of 50 games for the country. SPAR South Africa had built their run in the tournament on the back of gritty defensive stability, arguably being the strongest defensive outfit at the tournament. But they came out firing in the early exchanges and may have taken an early lead had Kayla de Waal not fired it narrowly wide.

The hosts were on top and the goal came through their fantastic captain. The African’s won a penalty corner, took it from the reverse side and produced a sensational strike from the skipper to open the scoring.

Kayla de Waal had a couple of chances but the goal would eventually come from the stick of tournament star Tegan Fourie. The ball was passed through every player on the court and eventually a reverse pass by Jess Lardant opened the defence up. It connected with Tegan Fourie, who took the space on offer and fired home. At the half time break the South Africans were good value for a 2-0 lead.

In the third quarter South Africa looked more likely to add to the scoring as Jamie Southgate fired in a shot from an acute angle and Tegan Fourie saw her shot trickle wide. The South Africans continued to defend like the Trojan army as the third quarter ended with Belgium still having only two shots at goal.

The Belgians would be given a lifeline when they played a superb through ball picked up the striker and a sensational touch diverted it past Cheree Greyvenstein to silence the crowd and give the visitors belief.

But as had been the case for most teams in the tournament, they found it incredibly tough to break down the South Africans. Even pulling their keeper off to launch an all out attack didn’t not create the outcomes they were hoping for and South Africa sealed a famous win.

The South Africans will next play Netherlands in the semi-final on Saturday afternoon before a potential final awaits later on the same day.
