TUT secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over UJ in a tense Varsity Football semifinal, booking their place in the final where they will face UFS. Meanwhile UFS advanced after holding their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout, edging NWU 4-3 to seal their spot in the championship clash.

UJ 0-1 TUT

In a nail-biting Varsity Football semifinal showdown, TUT Football secured their spot in the final with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts UJ Football. The match, played at a hushed UJ Soweto Stadium, was a tense tactical battle that came down to a single moment of brilliance.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with both teams prioritizing defence. TUT controlled possession, pushing UJ deep into their own territory, but neither side managed to create a clear-cut opportunity. The most notable action came in the 6th minute when UJ's goalkeeper, Kyle Van Rensburg, was forced to make a save from a long-range shot. The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

After the break, the intensity ramped up significantly. The physical game led to a flurry of yellow cards, and the momentum shifted decisively in the 69th minute. UJ's Yasidu Lifa received his second yellow card, earning him a red card and an early exit. 

This left the home team to play the remainder of the match with just ten men, giving TUT the confidence to press their advantage.

The decisive moment came shortly after. TUT's Lehlomo Tolo delivered the winning blow with a stunning strike, finding the back of the net and putting his team up 1-0. Having a man and a goal advantage, TUT continued to attack, but the score remained 1-0 at the final whistle.

This win was sweet revenge for TUT, who had been defeated 1-0 by UJ in a previous match in Round 6 during the round-robin stage. After finishing the season at the top of the table with five wins and two draws, TUT's victory eliminated UJ from the title race and earned them a well-deserved place in the final.

NWU Football suffered a heartbreaking exit from the Varsity Football 2025 semifinals after falling 4-3 to UFS Football in a tense penalty shootout at NWU Mafikeng Stadium on Thursday night.

The much-anticipated clash lived up to expectations, with both teams displaying tactical discipline and determination from the opening whistle. NWU took the early initiative, controlling possession and registering two shots on target in the opening 20 minutes, while UFS managed one attempt as they looked to settle into the game.

Despite NWU’s dominance in the first half, creating several promising chances and keeping UFS under pressure, neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval. The second half followed a similar pattern, with NWU continuing to push forward in search of a decisive goal.

The best chance of the match arrived in the final minute of regulation time when NWU were awarded a penalty. However, the opportunity slipped away when Momelezi Mngati failed to convert, leaving the score at 0-0 after 90 minutes and forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, both teams held their nerve initially, but two missed penalties from NWU proved costly. UFS capitalised on their chances, converting four of their spot-kicks to seal a 4-3 victory and book their place in the Varsity Football final.

It was a bitter end to an otherwise dominant performance from NWU, who controlled much of the match but could not translate their superiority into goals. The result means their 2025 Varsity Football journey comes to an end, while UFS advances with momentum into the championship decider.

The Varsity Football round-robin stages have officially concluded, with plenty of drama and excitement in Round 7. NWU delivered a commanding performance at the Mahikeng Stadium, overpowering Wits with a dominant 3-0 victory to secure a home semifinal.

At Shimlas Park in Bloemfontein, TUT caused a major upset by defeating UFS 2-1, a result that allowed them to squeeze into fourth place and claim the last available semifinal spot.

Despite a convincing 4-0 win over DUT, UP-Tuks fell just short and were unable to book a place in the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, UJ maintained their unbeaten run in the group stages, edging CUT 1-0 at the CUT Stadium to seal their place in the semifinals and finish the round stages on a high.

UFS 1-2 TUT

The four-time champions, TUT Football, kept their Varsity Football 2025 campaign alive on Thursday by stunning the high-flying UFS Football with a 2-1 victory at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein.

The Red Army broke their two-match losing streak at exactly the right time in the competition. For UFS, however, it was a disappointing evening as they created plenty of chances but were undone by lapses in concentration at crucial moments.

The scoring was opened in the 8th minute when Lucky Raphala converted a penalty for TUT against the run of play. The referee judged that Omphemetse Athibeng had handled the ball in the box during a corner. That early goal gave TUT more control of the match, whereas up to that point, it had been the hosts applying the pressure.

UFS slowly regained their rhythm and started creating more shots on target. Their persistence finally paid off when Jose Mondi pounced on a loose ball and drilled it into the back of the net, via a deflection, for the equaliser just before halftime.

Just as UFS looked to be gaining the upper hand, the towering Surprise Khoza restored TUT’s lead in the 64th minute with a superb header from a pinpoint delivery into the box. That proved to be the match-winning goal.

Despite the defeat, UFS have done enough to secure their spot in the playoffs, but it remains to be seen who their next opponents will be.

NWU Football delivered a commanding performance in round 7 of the Varsity Football tournament, defeating Wits Football 3-0 in Mahikeng on Thursday night.

The home side made an explosive start, finding the breakthrough within the opening five minutes. A swift move down the right flank saw Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk perfectly placed near the penalty spot to convert a low cross and hand NWU an early 1-0 lead. The goal lifted the intensity of the match, with both teams enjoying equal spells of possession. Wits, despite conceding early, maintained composure and looked to build attacking momentum, but they were denied by NWU’s well-organised backline.

By the 30-minute mark, NWU had registered three shots on target and several promising entries into the Wits penalty area, underlining their attacking intent. Wits responded with periods of possession but lacked penetration in the final third. The scoreline remained 1-0 at halftime, with NWU looking the sharper side in front of goal.

The second half began with NWU pressing high and pinning Wits deep in their half. Their dominance was rewarded in the 51st minute when captain Aphelele Sibisi doubled the advantage. Once again, the threat came from the right flank, as Van Schalkwyk turned provider, linking up with the midfield before setting up Sibisi, who calmly slotted home for 2-0.

NWU midfield trio-controlled possession, winning duels and recycling play efficiently, leaving Wits chasing shadows. The visitors struggled to carve out clear chances and were limited to long-range efforts that failed to trouble the NWU goalkeeper.

The result was sealed in the 89th minute when substitute Xolani Masethi produced the goal of the night. Spotting space outside the box, he unleashed a powerful long-range strike that flew beyond the Wits keeper, making it 3-0 and sending the home supporters into celebration.

NWU’s blend of early attacking sharpness, midfield dominance, and defensive discipline ensured a deserved victory.

UP-Tuks Football finish fifth on the log with a 4-0 victory over struggling DUT Football. The Stripe Generation played hosts to struggling DUT desperate to keep their playoffs hopes alive. The opening half saw both sides asking questions early on. DUT had a chance to take a lead inside the first minute, but Bonga Mthembu saw his effort goes wide.

Tuks thought they had a penalty on the 20th minute when Raymond Matlamela was brought down in the box however referee was not interested. Their efforts were rewarded within a couple of minutes when playmaker Raymond Matlamela released Risen Albert who saw his shot blocked by keeper Samkelo Zulu. The save only went as far as Quinton Stokes-Waller’s who made no mistake and poked into the net.

The home side pleated their lead swiftly through Matome Rangata. It was Tuks on the break and Rangata with a brilliant run out wide into the box and slotted it in the bottom corner. Tuks heading into the break with a two-goal cushion.

The Stripe Generation picked up where they left off and continue to run rampage on the visitors.

A pleasing cross hits Stokes-Waller before hitting DUT defender to take Tuks 3 nil up. It was not long before substitute Mathuane Selotola made it four for the Pretoria based side with another counter attack goal, goalkeeper committed and Rangata sent a stunning cross to Selotola. The experienced forward first slipped before he regathered and placed at the back of the net. A comfortable win for the Tuks to wrap up their campaign.

In their final clash before the semifinals, table-topping UJ Football maintained their unbeaten record with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against a battling CUT Football in Bloemfontein. UJ, dominant all season, showcased their class, while CUT, with just one win, fought valiantly but fell short.

UJ controlled the midfield, dictating play with authority. Tokoloho Vilakazi struck early, firing home a clinical goal to give the visitors the lead. UJ’s relentless pressure kept CUT on the back foot, though the home side’s defence, led by captain Thabang Mokoena, stood firm to keep the score at 1-0 by halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with UJ’s attack, orchestrated by the creative Tshepo Mosieleng, creating numerous chances. However, poor finishing prevented the Johannesburg side from extending their lead. CUT showed resilience, with substitute Mpho Ntabi nearly equalising midway through the second half, only to be thwarted by a brilliant defending and a save from UJ goalkeeper Kyle van Rensburg.

As the match neared its end, CUT pushed desperately for a draw, but UJ’s defence remained resolute, repelling every attack.

The visitors’ discipline and composure under pressure ensured they held on to secure the win, allowing them to finish the league stage unbeaten and head into the semifinals brimming with confidence and momentum.

The 2025 Varsity Women’s Football Final has all the makings of a classic. On 19 September at 7pm, the UJ Soweto Stadium will play host as the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) go head-to-head for the crown.

Both teams have been flawless in the competition. UJ have scored 13 goals without conceding, with Thato Mofolo leading the charts on six goals. UWC have been just as ruthless, firing in 15 goals and conceding only once, with Chelsea Daniels their top scorer on four.

The sides are no strangers to each other — they also meet regularly in the Hollywoodbets Super League, where UJ currently sit 6th with 35 points and UWC are 14th with 21 points. But when it comes to Varsity Football, it’s a different stage, and both arrive unbeaten.

Coach Modiko on the Journey

For UJ Head Coach Nthabeleng “Dunga” Modiko, the path to the final has been about balance, energy, and growth:

“My journey with the team into this year’s competition has been no different from the other years — well prepared, new players and new characters in the team that merge with the existing teammates to carry the UJ sports culture forward.

"This year has been amazing because the young players have brought in a sense of energy, new ideas, and have taken things further than what we already had. We’ve kept it simple, taking each game as it comes — and now we are fortunate to be in the final.”

The Meaning of the Final

After missing out last year, returning to the big stage is deeply significant:

“We missed out on the finals in 2024 after being knocked out by TUT in the semis. Looking back at 2022, when we lifted the trophy in front of our home crowd, this game is big for us. Playing again in front of our fans and our institution makes it special — it’s a way of thanking them for their support and celebrating 20 years of the University of Johannesburg. Personally, I enjoy finals. I’m a winner. I enjoy being on the podium, being close to holding the trophy.”

Defining the 2025 UJ Team

Modiko believes this year’s team has its own identity — one built on hunger and energy:

“This year’s team is a nice bowl of youth, enthusiastic characters, and optimism. They’re always pushing themselves beyond their challenges and asking questions of us as coaches, forcing us to grow with them. This is a team of young, energetic winners. They pride themselves in the orange and black, the ethos and values of this institution.”

On Facing UWC

Their opponents, UWC, are three-time Varsity champions (2021, 2023, 2024) — and Modiko acknowledges their pedigree:

“It’s always a brilliant opportunity for us to play against any institution. We know there will be fireworks. We respect UWC’s achievements — they have national team players and a national team coach. But for us, it’s an opportunity to test ourselves, our character, and our growth. Whether it’s Varsity or another competition, we are UJ. We will always put up a good fight. We just want to enjoy our football and give pride to our fans and to ourselves.”

Friday night’s Varsity Women’s Football Final isn’t just about silverware — it’s about history, pride, and identity. Will UJ reclaim the crown on home soil, or will UWC tighten their grip as the competition’s modern-day dynasty?

Round 6 of Varsity Football delivered thrilling action, headlined by the Gauteng derby where UJ edged TUT 1-0 at the UJ Soweto Stadium to remain top of the log and secure a spot in the tournament semifinals.

UFS also claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wits at the Wits Stadium, securing second place on the standings. Meanwhile, NWU boosted their top four ambitions with a crucial win at the Harry Gwala Stadium, and UP-Tuks finally got their campaign rolling in style, cruising to a dominant 5-0 triumph over CUT at Tuks Stadium.

DUT 0-1 NWU

The match kicked off at a high tempo, with the ball moving quickly from end to end. Both teams showed great energy, but neither managed to find an early breakthrough.

This was until a few minutes later when DUT began to be sloppy at the back, making a lot of mistakes. In the 33rd minute, a defensive mistake by the home team's centre half saw Thapelo Letsholonyane advancing into the box as the away team fired a first shot at DUT goalkeeper Samkelo Zulu, who pulled off a good save. The ball rebounded to Thabang Majoro, who scrambled and managed to get a shot fired into the back of the net for the opening goal of the match.

The rest of the half was played with the majority of it being in the home team's half, as they couldn’t find a way out of their defensive zones. NWU kept on piling the pressure, but in the end, nothing came out of it. The halftime score was 1–0 to the away side, NWU.

As the second half got underway, both teams pushed to seize control and tilt the game in their favour, but the early stages after kickoff produced little to separate them. DUT’s defence remained vulnerable, showing signs of inconsistency with a number of errors, yet NWU were unable to capitalise, with no player stepping up to punish those mistakes.

The match continued to be similar to the end of the first half, as DUT failed to move forward, while NWU failed to successfully execute any of their chances in the goalmouth.

The match ended 1–0 to the away side NWU, who took a further step closer to a top four finish, while the home team was left with very little to smile about as they suffered yet another defeat despite a packed Harry Gwala Stadium rocking with their fans.

Wits 0-1 UFS

Wits Men’s Football entered the clash with three changes to their starting line-up, signalling their intent to shake things up in a must-win encounter. Both Wits and UFS Men’s Football were battling for second place in what proved to be a decisive fixture. For Wits, a victory was essential to strengthen their grip on a semifinal spot following back-to-back draws, while UFS came in looking to extend their winning run and secure qualification to the last four.

The match began with high intensity. In the 10th minute, Wits goalkeeper Lwando Mvinjana pulled off a massive save against Kagiso Semenya's long-range effort. At the 20-minute mark, the score remained 0-0. UFS defended with a low block, looking for counter-attacks, while Wits pushed forward. The Educated Footballers were awarded a free kick following a foul on Mduduzi Ndaba, but Kgwadi Molepo's header went wide. Mvinjana made another incredible save in the 23rd minute off a UFS corner.

The Blues broke the deadlock in the 37th minute through Omphemetse Matlhogonolo Athibeng, who finished off a brilliant cross from Ben Kraai.

In the second half, Wits pressed hard to equalise against UFS's 1-0 lead. The team made substitutions, with Mduduzi Ndaba taken off for Tebogo Masemola. Tebogo Masemola's involvement brought more stability to Wits, leading to increased box entries.

Despite Wits' frustration leading to defensive mistakes, Jerome Jansen's long-range free kick hit the woodwork, and Simphiwe Mabena's shot was saved by UFS goalkeeper Lethokuhle Makhaya.

Wits fought hard in the dying minutes of the game, but it was too late. They pushed hard in the nail-biting final minutes with added time, but couldn't convert their chances to equalise.

UP-Tuks 5-0 CUT

Raymond Matlamela shone as UP-Tuks Men’s Football finally recorded their first win of the season in a 5-0 thumping of CUT Men’s Football. With the calculators out, Stripe Generation welcomed CUT in a must-win encounter to keep their hopes alive.

With a playoff spot possibility at stake, the Pretoria-based side did not waste time to show their intentions as they immediately piled pressure on the visitors.

The home side dominated possession from the early stages of the match. After a couple of missed chances, Nic Stothard’s troops kept asking questions. Matome Rangata sent a pleasing pass into the box and found the head of Quintin Stokes-Waller, who was denied by the upright.

It was not long until their efforts were rewarded, and it was playmaker Matlamela with the answers. On the break, a long pass from Damian Overmeyer found the clean boot of Matlamela, who perfectly controlled and curled it in the far post to hand the home side their much-needed lead.

Tuks doubled their lead again as Matlamela got on the scoresheet. On the stroke of halftime, Matlamela scored with a slick goal of the tournament contender to hand Tuks a healthy lead at the break.

The Stripe Generation returned from the tunnel with renewed energy as they went on to score three more goals. Paballo Mamabolo and Mnqobi Mkhize were subbed in on the 60th minute and continued to rub salt into CUT’s wound.

Matlamela, sitting on a brace, managed to get an assist after setting up Paballo Mamabolo with an inviting through ball. Mamabolo made no mistake, putting the ball in the back of the net. Matlamela was not done as he went on to complete his hat-trick. Camagu Mdevulana dinked it over the defence and Matlamela put the ball into an open net for his hat-trick.

Mkhize wrapped up the party with a late tap-in, as Tuks put five behind CUT.

The win came courtesy of a decisive 22nd-minute goal from Keletso Sekhwela’s volley in the box - a goal that proved to be the difference maker in this intense Varsity Football showdown.

From the opening whistle, TUT looked to dominate, pushing UJ deep into their own half with relentless pressure. But despite being on the back foot, the UJ Men's Football Team demonstrated tactical discipline, launching well-timed counterattacks that kept TUT's defence on their toes.

UJ's defence was solid, anchored by standout performances from Yasidu Lifa, Thabo Moshikere, and Ramaloko Ngwako. They were instrumental in thwarting TUT's advances, while UJ goalkeeper Kyle Van Rensburg also rose to the occasion to deny TUT a chance at goal with key saves.

This victory was especially sweet for UJ, marking a redemption of sorts against the team that crushed their title hopes in the 2023 final – the last time the two met in the tournament. This year, UJ has developed a reputation for clinical efficiency, scoring exactly one goal in each of their six Varsity Football matches so far – a trend that continued in this vital game.

TUT's Surprise Khoza was the first to be booked, while UJ’s Mkhonza also received a yellow card during his tireless work in the midfield, breaking up plays and keeping his team in control.

Few soccer enthusiasts would believe that if their team is sixth on the log, having scored the fewest goals, it still has a chance of qualifying for a semifinal.

This is precisely the situation in which Tuks' men's soccer team finds itself in the Varsity Tournament. In five matches, Tuks has drawn four times and lost once, scoring only one goal. Yet, and this is a big if, all is not lost. Unfortunately, things are no longer in the players' hands. Tuks' fate will depend on the results of other teams.

The chances are good that Tuks will win its remaining two matches. The challenge in both matches will be to score as many goals as possible. It could mean that Tuks will end with 10 points on the log. But then everything could boil down to the team's goal differences.

As things stand, UJ is the only team that is guaranteed to play in the semifinals. The team is first on the log with 11 points after five matches and should definitely add three more points. Kovsies has 10 points, but its last two games are Wits and TUT. Anything can happen. Wits, TUT, and Northwest all have eight points. Northwest will probably also end up with 11 points, guaranteeing them a spot in the semifinals.

One scenario would be for TUT to lose to UJ and Kovsies, leaving them with 8 points. Then Wits should lose against Kovsies and Northwest. Four draws would also put Tuks in contention for a semifinal spot.

But if you think about it logically, the chances are slim that the results of four games will all favour Tuks. It's like wishing that the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus really existed. The positive is that Tuks' players are not thinking of throwing in the towel yet.

Damian Overmeyer, who last week against Wits scored Tuks's first and only goal, said, "The team morale is still good. The guys, more than anything, are determined to give a good representation of the team that we are. We have been dominant in our play, but we lack the final touch."

Matome Rangata, who was the Player of the Match in the game against Wits, agrees with Overmeyer.

"We know the situation is not fully in our hands, but we are motivated to give everything in the last two games. The focus is now on controlling what we can, finishing strong. Hopefully, other results will go our way."

The Tuks women's team's chances of progressing to the Varsity Tournament semifinals ended yesterday when they lost 2-0 against UWC. Tuks was victorious in their first game, beating the University of Venda 5-1. On Saturday, they played to 1-all draw against TUT.

On Thursday at Tuks, Tuks's men will play CUT. Kickoff is at 18:30.

The pressure intensified in Round 3 of Varsity Women’s Football at the UJ Soweto Stadium, where defending champions UWC strengthened their title defence with a 2-0 victory over a struggling UP-Tuks, sealing their spot in the semifinals. UJ also booked their semifinal place after displaying hunger and determination in a commanding 4-0 win over winless CPUT, firmly positioning themselves as strong contenders for the silverware this season. TUT finally claimed their first win of the campaign with a resounding 8-0 triumph over UNIVEN, while NWU and Wits played out a thrilling 2-2 draw to share the spoils.

Defending champions UWC Women’s Football continued their dominance in the group stages, sealing a perfect three-match winning streak to book their place in the semifinals. Their latest triumph came with a 2-0 victory over UP-Tuks Women’s Football.

UWC took an early lead in the 7th minute when Mmabatho Mogale delivered a perfectly curled corner that met the head of Chelsea Daniels, who nodded the ball into the net. By the 20th minute, UWC remained 1-0 ahead, with both sides maintaining a high-intensity tempo. However, UWC had created clear scoring chances, while UP-Tuks struggled to break down their solid defense.

UP-Tuks manage to create some opportunities in the first half, including Sivuyile Njobeni's free-kick that hit the woodwork. UP-Tuks' forward Moeletsi Digoro was booked with a yellow card for fouling the UWC goalkeeper.

In the second half, UP-Tuks put pressure on UWC's defense, with Nonhlakanipho Filand having a promising chance with a long-range shot. However, Thandeka Ngcobo pulled off a brilliant save to deny UP-Tuks the equaliser. UJ Women’s Football booked their place in the semifinals of the 2025 Varsity Women’s Football tournament with a dominant 4-0 victory over CPUT, a result that also secured their spot at the top of Group B. The match began at a lively pace, with both sides creating early scoring opportunities before UJ took full control.

Orange Army took the lead in the 7th minute when Adivhaho Mphangale headed home with a well-delivered corner kick from Portia Masilela, giving UJ a 1-0 advantage. CPUT goalkeeper Cassidy Primo made a crucial save on Sthembiso Msomi's shot, but UJ's dominance continued.

Just after the save, CPUT made two substitutions, bringing in Sinothile Makhanya and Asiphe Delekile for Mesuli Bhungalipheli and Sinothile Lirula. However, UJ extended their lead in the 2-minute added time, with Adivhaho Mphangale scoring a well-taken goal on top of the D-line, making it 2-0 at halftime.

Wits Women’s Football and NWU Women’s Football battled to a 2-2 draw in Round 3 of the Varsity Women’s Football at the UJ Soweto Stadium. Wits secured a quick lead with two impressive goals in the first half, but NWU fought back to level the score in the final moments of the game.

The game began with both teams cautiously feeling each other out, and the first ten minutes saw no goals. However, the deadlock was broken in the 12th minute when Wits striker Aliyaah Allie scored a stunning opening goal. Shortly after, Wits doubled their lead when Lusanda Nyathi headed in a second goal from a free kick.

Just before halftime, NWU responded when Veronicca Maswanganyi capitalised on a blocked clearance, slipping a low shot between the Wits goalkeeper's legs to make the score 2-1.

NWU came out of the break determined to find an equalizer. They relentlessly attacked the Wits defense, but it wasn't until the final moments of stoppage time that they found their reward. From a corner kick, Dlikilili took a shot that deflected off a Wits defender and into the back of the net, leveling the score just before the final whistle.

In a dominant display, the TUT Women's Football secured a resounding 8-0 victory over UNIVEN Women’s Football, earning their place in the semifinals against UJ. The win mirrored UWC's previous success against UNIVEN, highlighting TUT's formidable attacking power.

The match started with UNIVEN holding strong, keeping the score at 0-0 for the first ten minutes. However, the floodgates opened when Lindiwe Nkambule scored TUT's first goal in the 10th minute. This was quickly followed by a second goal from Naledi Thakanyane just three minutes later.

The rest of the half saw a scoring spree with goals from Mokgaetji Ramanna and two more from Thakanyane and Thabiso Senyatsi, bringing the score to 5-0 by halftime.

Both Thakanyane and Senyatsi were the stars of the show, each completing a hat-trick. Thakanyane scored her third goal in the 44th minute, and Senyatsi followed with her third just three minutes later.

With a commanding lead, TUT's coach wisely rested several key players by the 62nd minute, making all of their substitutions to prepare for the upcoming semifinal. Despite the heavy defeat, UNIVEN's coach also used the opportunity to give his players valuable game time, ensuring they could enjoy their participation in the tournament.

Round 2 of Varsity Women’s Football saw defending champions UWC storm past UNIVEN with a 10-0 thrashing. UJ continued their winning start to the season, claiming a 2-0 victory over Wits to make it two wins from two.

NWU bounced back from their opening-round defeat with a 2-1 win over CPUT, while the Tshwane derby between TUT and UP-Tuks ended in a 1-1 draw.

All round 2 matches were played at the UJ Soweto Stadium B-Field and the main UJ Soweto Stadium.

UWC 10-0 UNIVEN

UWC Women’s Football started their Varsity Women’s Football title defence in spectacular fashion, defeating newcomers UNIVEN Women’s Football with a commanding 10-0 victory in round 2 of the tournament.

UWC's offense exploded early, scoring four goals in the first 10 minutes.

Captain Tiffany Kortjie began the onslaught just two minutes into the game, followed quickly by goals from Chelsea Daniels, Faith Maswanganyi and Thembelihle Zulu.

The relentless pressure forced UNIVEN's head coach, Carlo Negovha, to make an early substitution just 12 minutes in, bringing on Ayanda Mabapa for Sara Ramphabana.

However, UWC’s scoring continued. Univen's goalkeeper, Matete Makena, conceded seven goals before being replaced by Nyeleti Mathebula.

Unfortunately for UNIVEN, Mathebula immediately conceded an eighth goal upon entering the game.

The goal fest was led by hat-tricks from Kortjie and Daniels. Akholiwe Matsotsi also contributed with a brace, while Maswanganyi and Zulu each scored one goal.

With this emphatic win, UWC secured three points and made a powerful statement in their quest to defend their championship title.

In a thrilling encounter, NWU Women’s Fotball bounced back from their heavy defeat to UJ on Friday, emerging victorious against a stubborn CPUT Women’s Football side.

The match got off to a high intensity start, with both teams creating scoring opportunities.

In the 10th minute, NWU had a promising chance with a free kick taken by Veronicca Maswanganyi on the scoring line, but it failed to find back of the net.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 23rd minute, thanks to a well-executed press from NWU.

Nontobeko Gumede scored the opening goal for NWU after a CPUT defender's misplaced pass deflected off Neo Montshosi and Gumede was quick to capitalise on the opportunity, finishing it off with precision.

Just before the goal, a forced change was made in the 25th minute of the first half for CPUT as goalkeeper Nonhle Ngema had to be substituted due to an injury, making way for Cassidy Primo.

Just before the halftime whistle, CPUT equalised in the 38th minute with a stunning long-range goal by Mosetsanagape Leepile, capitalising on a defensive lapse by NWU.

The score was now 1-1, and the teams headed into the break on level terms.

In the second half, after several chances missed by NWU, they finally found the back of the net in the 54th minute.

Tshiamo Gosiame Phiri scored a well-taken goal from a throw-in, giving NWU a 2-1 lead.

The win marked a successful turnaround for NWU after their heavy defeat yesterday, while CPUT will look to regroup and bounce back after back-to-back defeats in their next match.

The match got off to a fast-paced start, with TUT opening the scoring in the fifth minute through Mokgaetji Ramanna. 

However, Tuks quickly responded as just two minutes later Lindiwe Nkambule deflected a ball into her own net, leveling the score at 1-1.

The match remained evenly balanced, with both sides creating chances.

By the 20th minute, TUT maintained their high press, putting constant pressure on Tuks’ defense, while Tuks chose to sit deep in a low block and wait for counter-attacking opportunities.

In the 27th minute, one such counter was stopped when Nonzuzo Buthelezi fouled Moeletsi Digoro and from the resulting free-kick Sivuyile Njobeni came agonisingly close as her strike rattled the woodwork.

As halftime approached, TUT's goalkeeper Retshepaone Ntwayagae suffered an injury in a contest for a ball with Moeletsi Digoro.

The match was later suspended due to weather conditions and lightning, with the teams returning to the changing rooms until the weather improved.

In the second half eventually the match resumed, TUT made a forced change, bringing in goalkeeper Rebona Tshoma to replace the injured Retshepaone Ntwayagae.

The match remained tightly contested, with both teams probing and trying to create opportunities in midfield.

Despite intense midfield battles, neither team could carve out clear-cut chances. In the end, the match ended 1-1, with the two teams sharing the points.

In a thrilling Varsity Women’s Football Johannesburg derby, the UJ Women's Football secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Wits Women’s Football on Saturday night.

The win marked UJ's second impressive performance of the tournament, earning them bragging rights in the city.

UJ, known as the "Orange Army," dominated possession from the start, but Wits' defence held strong.

Wits goalkeeper Bridgette Moekwa was in top form, making a series of crucial saves to frustrate UJ's relentless attack and keep the first half goalless.

However, UJ's persistence paid off after the break. Just 16 minutes into the second half, Gugulethu Dlamini broke the deadlock.

Making a counter-attack from midfield, she fired a perfect strike into the top right corner of the net, giving UJ the lead and making up for an earlier penalty miss that hit the crossbar.

The lead was doubled in the 64th minute when on-form striker Thato Mofolo scored a second goal.

Unfortunately, Wits' goalkeeper Moekwa was later forced to leave the pitch due to a head injury following a collision with UJ's Sbongakonke Mzobe.

In a physical and high-intensity battle between Wits Women’s Football and CPUT Women’s Football, Wits managed to edge out their opponents with a narrow 1-0 win in the opening round of the Varsity Women’s Football 2025 campaign, played under challenging windy conditions at the UJ Soweto Campus Stadium.

Both sides started the match on the front foot, showing clear intentions of securing an early advantage, but it was Wits forward Ayanda Mnyembane who made the breakthrough, with her early goal ultimately proving to be the decisive factor in the tightly contested encounter.

The match was intense and physical, with both teams creating opportunities, but Wits' defence held strong to secure the win. Wits dominated the early stages, piling pressure on CPUT's defence. In the third minute, Mnyembane broke through the CPUT defence after a well-weighted pass and scored the opening goal for Wits.

As the game progressed, CPUT began to push back against Wits despite the challenging conditions. In the 20th minute, Bridgette Moekwa, Wits' goalkeeper, made an impressive save on Sinelisiwe Phumlomo's strike. The windy conditions seemed to favour Wits, as it blew towards the CPUT goal, resulting in more set pieces for Wits. However, they struggled to convert the opportunities into additional goals.

In the second half, both teams still battled it out, with the midfielders playing a crucial role. In the 60th minute, both teams got half-chances but were unable to convert them into goals. In the 70th minute, CPUT’s Liyema Tom received a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Mnyembane, and despite creating several opportunities to level the score, the Cape side were unable to capitalise on their chances.

The clash between UP-Tuks Women’s Football and UNIVEN Women’s Football kicked off with high intensity and end-to-end action. It was the newcomers, UNIVEN, who made the early breakthrough, stunning their opponents in the 14th minute when Andani Dabana calmly slotted home to open the scoring.

However, Tuks quickly responded with Nonhlakanipho Lucy Finland equalising in the 31st minute. Just four minutes later, in the 35th minute, Sbahle Ndlovu scored a second goal for Tuks, giving them a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Tuks pick up right where they left off, controlling possession and pushing forward with intent. They thought they had extended their lead in the 39th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Just minutes later, in the 52nd minute, Ndlovu showcased her class once again, completing her brace with a spectacular finish to put Tuks 3-1 ahead.

UNIVEN’s defensive woes deepened as they struggled to contain the relentless pressure, and soon after, Moeletsi Digoro found herself unmarked inside the box. With composure and precision, she unleashed a powerful strike past the goalkeeper, stretching Tuks’ advantage to 4-1.

In the final moments of the match, Tuks sealed their victory with a fifth goal through Rethabile Makhwela, who came off the bench, rose highest to meet a corner kick taken by Mmakhgotso Rose Mashishi and struck the ball into the net, making it 5-1.

UJ 4-0 NWU

UJ Women's Football team kicked off their season in style, registering a decisive 4-0 home victory against NWU Women’s Football.

It was a one-sided affair from the start, with UJ dominating possession and keeping NWU's defence under constant pressure. The Orange Army wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Sbongakonke Mzobe found the back of the net just seven minutes into the game with a perfectly placed shot in the top right corner.

The star of the show, however, was Thato Mofolo. She was in sensational form, scoring a brilliant hat-trick before being substituted in the second half by coach Nthabeleng Modiko to rest her for upcoming matches.

NWU's goalkeeper, Mmabatho Tladi, was kept busy throughout the match, facing a barrage of shots from the UJ attack. Despite her best efforts, she couldn't stop the four goals that sealed a convincing victory for the hosts. With a 2-0 lead at halftime and another two goals in the second half, UJ cruised to a well-deserved win.

Coach Modiko's strategic substitutions in the second half, resting key players, suggest that the team is ready for the challenges ahead.

The Joburg derby lit up the UJ Soweto Stadium as hosts UJ edged out the high-flying Wits with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Round 3 of Varsity Football 2025.

Meanwhile, TUT climbed to the summit of the log after securing a convincing 3-1 win over CUT Men’s Football at the CUT Stadium.

UFS also claimed maximum points with a 2-1 triumph against DUT at the Harry Gwala Stadium, while the clash at NWU Mahikeng Stadium ended in a tense stalemate between NWU and UP-Tuks.

UJ 1-0 WITS

UJ Men’s Football claimed city bragging rights in a fiercely contested Joburg derby, edging past Wits Men’s Football with a narrow 1-0 victory in Round 3 of the Varsity Football competition.

A decisive 12th-minute penalty proved to be the difference on the night, as UJ held their ground to hand Wits their first defeat of the season in front of a packed and vibrant crowd at the UJ Soweto Stadium.

Tumelo Machete was the hero for UJ, calmly converting a penalty after a handball by Wits' Duane Bennett inside the box.

While it was the only goal of the game, both teams kept the pressure on, with their goalkeepers, UJ’s Kyle Van Rensburg and Wits’ Lwando Mvinjana, busy throughout the first half.

Just as the first half drew to a close, a minor blackout added to the derby drama, as two of the floodlights at UJ Soweto Stadium went out.

This caused a more than 30-minute delay before the second half could get under way.

Once play resumed, the match was a relentless battle. Despite Wits' coach Thando Zulu making an immediate substitution to shake things up, UJ's defence remained solid.

UJ goalkeeper Kyle Van Rensburg was particularly impressive, making several crucial saves to deny Wits a late equalizer.

After 97 minutes of gripping end-to-end football, the final whistle was met with thunderous cheers from the UJ home crowd, celebrating a hard-fought victory.

The result not only strengthened UJ’s push for a coveted top four spot in the Varsity Football standings but also brought an emphatic end to Wits’ impressive winning streak.

It was a crucial bottom-of-the-table encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium as DUT hosted UFS in a match where both sides were desperate for points.

The game began at a cautious pace, with neither team able to take control early on, though it was the visiting UFS side that appeared more composed and looked the more threatening as they gradually settled into the contest.

Just after the 20-minute mark, the deadlock was finally broken as UFS took the lead.

A dangerous run ended with one of their players being brought down right on the edge of the box, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a free kick. 

Stepping up with confidence, Iviwe Dyabaza produced a moment of sheer brilliance, curling his effort into the top corner and leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Just two minutes later, the visitors furthered their lead as they crowded the box of the opposition Jerome Jansen finding the back of the net with a tap in.

The halftime whistle came as a lifesaver for DUT as their defence was in sixes and sevens, battling with the away team’s attack, 2-0 to UFS at the break.

The second half started off on a high note as both teams were looking to control the game.

The 70th minute saw another spectacular set piece, in the way of the home side, a beautiful goal from Nkululeko Nkosi, from a free kick which somehow found its way in the back of the net as the home team pulled one back, 2–1 to UFS.

TUT Men’s Football claimed their second win of the Varsity Football campaign on Thursday night with a 3-1 victory over the CUT Men’s Football at the CUT Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Despite the scoreline, TUT had to work hard for the three points, but they showed why they are such a well-drilled unit and why they proudly wear four stars on their chests.

The Red Army got off to a flying start, taking the lead as early as the 2nd minute when Glen Mashimbye scored with their very first attack.

It wasn’t long before the advantage was doubled, thanks to a neat finish from Lucky Raphala.

CUT pulled one back when Mzwakhe Shabalala converted from the penalty spot, giving the home side some much-needed momentum after conceding twice so early.

That goal settled the nerves and CUT managed to see out the remainder of the half trailing by just one, despite relentless pressure from the four-time champions.

After the break, TUT kept up the intensity, but CUT looked a lot more composed both in possession and in defence.

However, the pressure eventually told when Lindokuhle Nyandeni restored TUT’s two-goal cushion from the spot, after a reckless challenge by CUT goalkeeper Siseko Faku.

Although CUT fought bravely until the end, their shaky start ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The tightly contested battle between NWU and UP-Tuks ended without a breakthrough, as both teams failed to convert their chances and were forced to share the spoils in a goalless 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of football.

From the opening whistle, NWU controlled possession and dictated much of the play in the first half.

Their midfield pressed forward with intent, keeping the Tuks defense under pressure. Despite their dominance, they were unable to convert chances into goals, largely due to the heroics of Tuks goalkeeper, Leathan Croats.

Wearing jersey number 13, Croats produced a commanding display, using sharp reflexes and smart positioning to deny NWU on multiple occasions.

At halftime, the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0, with NWU’s dominance in ball possession not reflected on the scoreboard.

The second half saw more of the same as NWU searched for a breakthrough, but their efforts were consistently thwarted.

As the match wore on, frustration grew for the home side. NWU threw numbers forward in the final minutes, but Croats stood tall in goal, frustrating their attackers and ensuring his side remained in contention until the final whistle.

The game ended with honors even, but it was Croats’ performance that shone brightest, earning him the plaudits of the day.

TUT edged DUT 1-0 at the iconic Harry Gwala Stadium, while UJ and NWU couldn’t be separated in a tightly contested draw. At Tuks Stadium, UP-Tuks and UFS shared the spoils in a goalless stalemate.

A chilly Johannesburg evening provided the perfect backdrop for a thrilling Varsity Football 2025 season opener as UJ faced off against NWU. With a packed stadium and buzzing crowd, the energy was electric from the first whistle.

The home side, UJ, wasted no time in igniting the crowd, scoring in just the third minute. Thabo Moshikere slotted home a tap-in after Yasidu Lifa headed down a pinpoint free kick from Teboho Makhalanyane. UJ held onto their 1-0 lead going into the break, though not without pressure from NWU. The visitors fought hard for an equaliser, with UJ goalkeeper Lungelo Sithole pulling off a crucial save from a close-range header. The game’s only caution went to NWU’s Thapelo Letsholonyane for a rough challenge.

In the second half, both teams traded attacks in a tense battle. The substitutions made by both coaches proved impactful, especially for NWU. Their efforts paid off in the 89th minute when Molemo Kukama found the back of the net, levelling the score at 1-1. The referee's final whistle blew shortly after, with the two teams taking home a point each.

Wits marked their return to the Varsity Football tournament in style, securing a dominant 4-1 victory over CUT at Wits Rugby Stadium.

Back after a two-year absence from the campaign, Wits sent a clear message with a powerful performance.

The match was intense from the start, with both teams creating clear scoring opportunities. Wits took the lead when Tebogo Masemola scored a brilliant goal, assisted by Simphiwe Mabena. The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the home side, with CUT reduced to 10 men after Malefetsane Doctor Matale received a red card.

Wits took full control in the second half, dictating the tempo and creating a host of scoring opportunities. Despite missing several early chances to extend their lead, they eventually found the back of the net three more times through Sfiso Mlondo, Mxolisi Mthiya, and Simphiwe Mabena. CUT pulled one back late in the match with a consolation goal from Nkosingiphile Lubisi, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

It didn’t take long for TUT to settle, as the Red Machine struck just seven minutes into the game. Precious Mohale tapped in from a well-placed six-yard pass to put the visitors ahead, 1-0 to TUT.

The match continued at a competitive pace, with DUT boosted by a packed stadium of home supporters. Both sides had opportunities, but none were converted before the break.

TUT’s experience showed as they maintained their narrow lead through halftime, despite the chilly Pietermaritzburg weather.

The second half kicked off with intensity. DUT came close to equalising through a powerful strike by Iviwe Sodidi, only to be denied by an outstanding save.

A crucial moment followed when Lucky Raphala was brought down in the box, earning a penalty. Sekwanele Mtolo rose to the occasion, saving the spot-kick and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

The battle remained fierce until the final whistle, but TUT held firm, using their composure to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory in their season opener.

Hosting the match at a packed Tuks Stadium, the home team felt the pressure to impress, while UFS came determined to prove a point. The first half was intense, with Tuks showing more hunger and creating the early chances to break the deadlock.

The game was tightly contested with both teams evenly matched. Tuks had the first clear chance when Samukelo Ngodela’s shot hit the upright. UFS looked dangerous on counterattacks, but Tuks’ goalkeeper easily handled their back-to-back attempts.

Despite controlling possession for most of the first half, the Pretoria side couldn’t break down UFS’s defence. A costly error by Tuks captain Edward Rankwe nearly gave UFS the lead, but they failed to capitalise. The teams went into halftime locked at 0-0 after a frustrating first half.

Nicholas Stothard’s team came out strong after halftime, with Matome Rangata’s pace and Camagu Mdevulana’s precise passing threatening UFS. Debutant Risen Albert joined on the wing as Tuks pressed hard. Despite hitting the post twice, including a chance by Paballo Mamabolo, Tuks couldn’t break through. Aden McCarthy: Wits to Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana.

The former Wits defender made his senior Amakhosi debut in 2025 against Sekhukhune United in Polokwane following in the footsteps of his father, Fabian, who was also a Chiefs player between 2002 and 2008. He made his much-anticipated Bafana Bafana debut in a high-stakes clash against Egypt in 2025 captaining the COSAFA Cup squad.

Heaven Sereetsi: NWU Eagles to Cape Town City

After impressing in Varsity Football, the 21 year old North West University star signed for Cape Town City in 2024 and his first goal for the Citizens was an absolute scorcher. He has since made more than 30 appearances for the Cape side.

Thulani Zandamela: UJ to Mamelodi Sundowns

The 2022 FNB Player of The Tournament made such an impact for UJ that he was quickly snapped up by Mamelodi Sundowns. The Masandawana star is among the leading goal-scorers in the DStv Diski Challenge and pushing for a senior team appearance.

Nhlakanipho 'CR7' Ngwenya: DUT to Durban City FC

New kids on the block, DUT, did not have the 2024 campaign they were hoping in their debut season, but 21-year-old skillful winger Ngwenya made such an impact scoring one of the most memorable goals of the season that he was offered a contract with Durban City who will be taking part in the top flight PSL league this season.

Kgwadi Molepo: Wits to Orlando Pirates

The former Wits midfielder's promising talent didn't go unnoticed during Varsity Football and his efforts were rewarded with a contract at Orlando Pirates. The 23 year old captained the Pirates DDC team and was loaned out to Kruger United in the NFD, but returned to the Buccaneers in July.

Defensive stalwart, Tshepiso Mahlangu, was instrumental at NWU before moving to Tuks University and competed in the 2024 Varsity Football tournament. His aerial

dominance and commanding defensive work paid off and he signed a contract with AmaTuks playing in the in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Varsity Football 2025 kicks off on 7 August and no doubt a new crop of talented players will emerge and go on to sign professional contracts in the future.

The UWC men's football team have followed in the boots of their female counterparts to be crowned Varsity Football 2024 champions. The Cape side scored a late equaliser in the final minutes and claimed the title after a tense 8-7 win on penalties against NWU in a match that ended 1-1 after regulation time.

The game began with NWU on the front foot, dominating the first 10 minutes with strong ball control and aggressive play. Despite their early dominance, both teams struggled to find the back of the net. By the 30th minute, the game had become more balanced, with NWU maintaining a strong ball possession but unable to break through UWC's defense. The first half ended in a stalemate at 0-0.

The second half saw NWU continue to push for the lead, and their persistence paid off in the 48th minute. A well-taken corner resulted in a towering header by Momelezi Mngati, putting NWU ahead 1-0.

As the match progressed, UWC began to find their rhythm, and in the 86th minute, Leandro De Sousa delivered a crucial equaliser. His powerful shot from outside the box on the left side left the NWU goalkeeper with no chance, levelling the score at 1-1. The late goal set up a nervy final few minutes, but despite five added minutes, neither side could find a winner, and the game went to penalties.

In the penalty shootout, both teams showed composure as the scores remained deadlocked after seven rounds. However, NWU's captain Olebogeng Moeti missed the crucial eighth penalty, allowing UWC to claim the title. UWC kept their nerve, scoring all of their penalties to secure an 8-7 victory and lift the trophy for a second time in their history.

UWC striker Leandro De Sousa was the standout player for UWC, delivering a game-changing performance in the 2024 Varsity Football final.

His crucial equaliser in the 86th minute brought UWC back into contention when they were trailing 1-0. With a powerful shot from outside the box on the left side, De Sousa showcased his skill and composure under pressure. His goal levelled the match and shifted momentum in UWC's favour, ultimately leading them to victory.

The lanky forward’s influence was instrumental in keeping UWC’s title hopes alive, making him a key figure in their championship triumph.

Cape Town City midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo has praised Varsity Football's efforts to better the standard of football in South Africa and calls on more stakeholders to get involved with the competition and work towards football development in the country.

Mokotjo, 33, believes with stronger support Varsity Football could do even more for South African youth development.

"You know talent can be found in so many different ways in South Africa. When it comes to spotting that talent you need initiative" says Mokotjo.

"So I think not only are companies like FNB doing a great job, but there should also be many other stakeholders that raise their hands to help. We need people who will say, listen, we want to get involved. That will just grow football in the country."

The Free State-born player has made over 20 caps for Bafana Bafana and has recently returned to SA after playing for clubs like FC Twente, Brentford and FC Cincinnati in the USA to name a few. He spent the last season playing for Sekhukhune United before joining Cape Town City.

The midfield maestro knows first hand about the opportunities Varsity Football provides to those who come through it's ranks.

"My younger brother played for UFS a couple of seasons ago, I have watched him and know how good the tournament is," he said.

"I think it's a very important and amazing initiative. And you see we have Heaven Sereetsi here with us [at Cape Town City FC] which shows the work that's been done."

 

The 2024 Varsity Football finalists have been decided after UWC travelled to Pretoria and beat log leaders Tuks for the second time in the tournament while in Mahikeng the Eagles got their revenge and thumped UFS to secure a home final that will take place on 26 September at 7pm. Here's how the two teams advanced in the matchday wrap report.

UP-Tuks 0-1 UWC

The 2015 Varsity Football winners UWC was the first side to march to this year's final after defeating the three-time champions UP-Tuks 1-0.

As anticipated the encounter did not spare any drama and action as both sides started high spirited, Tuks enjoyed much of the possession in the opening exchanges.

UWC looked dangerous on the counter attack and immediately capitalised on their chances in a cheeky piece of play from their playmaker Relebohile Matima who made no mistake and slotted the ball in a far upright to put the visitors ahead after 11 minutes.

In an attempt to find the back of the net for an equaliser, Tuks’ Matome Rangata’s crosses were unsuccessful as UWC's strong defensive wall wasn't going to be exposed. Both teams articulated their set pieces in textbook plays. Rangata and Camagu Mdevulana were the trusted takers for Tuks, however their efforts did not materialize as the score remained the same, 1-0 at the interval.

UP-Tuks returned from the break rejuvenated with the introduction of Ntokozo Madela. The Stripe Generation kept pressing for an equalizer in the dying minutes, but their attempts were fruitless.

Madela, with the chance to put Tuks back in the game, found himself with an open net from a rebound but hit the post. Seconds later Mnqobi Mkhize saw his header go Narrowly wide as UWC hung on to a closely contested 1-0 victory.

NWU 4-0 UFS

NWU delivered a commanding performance, defeating UFS 4-0 at the NWU Mafikeng Stadium to book their place in the Varsity Football final. The result was a reversal of fortunes after UFS had beaten NWU in the group stages. This time, the home side dominated from the outset, leaving UFS with little chance of repeating their previous success.

Although the opening 10 minutes did not produce any goals, NWU was clearly on top, dictating play and putting pressure on the UFS defense. The breakthrough finally came in the 26th minute when Reatlegile Kgosithebe rose high to meet a cross from the right flank, heading the ball into the back of the net to put NWU ahead.

Despite UFS's efforts to respond, NWU continued to press, and the first half ended with the score still 1-0 in favour of the hosts.

The second half saw NWU continue to impose their will on the game. In the 52nd minute, Lucky Letwaba doubled NWU’s lead with a stunning free kick. The set piece was awarded after a tough challenge by a UFS defender on an NWU player, and Letwaba made no mistake, curling the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

UFS tried to find a way back into the game, but NWU’s defense remained solid, with the goalkeeper making several crucial saves to keep the clean sheet intact. As the game progressed, NWU piled on more pressure, and in the 84th minute, Xolani Masethi added a third goal with a powerful volley from the left flank, leaving the UFS goalkeeper with no chance.

To cap off an excellent team performance, Molemo Kukama scored NWU's fourth goal in the 90th minute, finishing off a swift counter attack. The final whistle confirmed NWU's 4-0 victory and their place in the Varsity Football final.

UWC showed no mercy as they thrashed VUT in Cape Town, NWU were victorious over DUT to secure a home semi-final, UFS took the Bloem derby bragging rights while UP-Tuks claim top position on the log by defeating defending champions TUT in the Tshwane derby.

Here's how it all happened:

NWU secured an emphatic 3-0 victory over DUT, putting on a dominant display from start to finish. The match kicked off with NWU immediately taking control of the game, setting the pace with strong attacking plays.

The first breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Pascual Tivane found the back of the net as he capitalised on a well-delivered pass from the flank, tapping the ball in from inside the box. His goal put NWU ahead 1-0 early in the game, giving them momentum and setting the tone for the rest of the half.

Despite numerous chances created by NWU, including several dangerous attempts on goal, DUT's defense managed to hold firm, limiting the damage. 

NWU dominated possession throughout the first half, but only Tivane's goal separated the two sides at halftime, with the score NWU 1-0 DUT.

The second half saw NWU continue their aggressive approach, and their efforts paid off once again. In the 54th minute, Reatlegile Kgosithebe rose above the DUT defense to head in a cross from the right flank.

The perfectly timed cross was met with precision as Reatlegile’s header doubled NWU’s lead, making it 2-0. The goal reflected NWU’s persistence and ability to convert their dominance into tangible results on the scoreboard.

As the game progressed, NWU kept up the pressure, and in the 72nd minute Kgosithebe struck again. This time, a well-executed set piece led to the goal, a short corner was played to the left flank, and the ensuing cross found Reatlegile unmarked in the box.

He expertly headed the ball into the net for his second goal of the game, extending NWU’s lead to 3-0.

After a routing of VUT and a clear win with five goals to nil, the UWC side should now be considered a real contender for the Varsity Football title. On Thursday evening at the University of the Western Cape Stadium, UWC scored three early goals including one by captain Damian Overmeyer with a stunning free kick.

The goal was quickly followed by Asibonge Maphumulo who towered over the VUT defence to score with a blistering header followed by the UWC all time scorer Leandro De Sousa who chipped the ball over VUT keeper Tebogo Mosia leaving him helpless.

Still VUT showed resilience with sleek football passes in the middle of the park mastered by Lucky Raphala, Lehlohonolo Ncambe and Marumo Lekoloane. In a bid to close the gap, the MaVUTi threw caution into the wind and came running at UWC in the second stanza leaving them wide open at the back.

UWC will face Tuks away in the semifinal on 12 September.

Unfortunately for UFS, it just wasn’t enough to book a home semifinals, and they needed to beat a determined CUT by three or more unanswered goals, but the first prize remains reaching the last four.

UFS started the derby like a house of fire and they just looked like a team that gained a lot of confidence from their outstanding win a week prior in Cape Town. They attacked from the first minute and they were finding a lot of good space, with their runners opting to take a direct route.

The deadlock was broken in the 11th minute of the match when they were awarded a free kick following a reckless two-footed challenge. The delivery of the free kick was spot-on and drove a powerful header into the back of the net for the score.

CUT looked really good when they had the odd opportunity to attack, but with their inexperience the patience lacked. UFS had a few more chances to score, and maybe it was the excitement and the moment that got the better in the moment. The score remained unchanged at the break.

In the second half CUT came up with more purpose and they succeeded in cutting out UFS’ opportunities to score, while they also created one or two heart-pounding moments. UFS did however have a 75th minute goal disallowed for off-side, but it was truly a debatable call by the linesman.

UP-Tuks 1-0 TUT

Varsity Football giants UP-Tuks and TUT collided in a packed Tuks Stadium with both teams in need of victory.

The first 10 minutes was a slow start for both sides with no real threats. Tuks looked electric and dangerous on aerial balls with Matome Rangata causing troubles on the flanks interchanging with Samukelo Ngodela. The Stripe Generation looked dangerous on set pieces and wing play.

Finally Tuks broke the deadlock through a pinpoint free kick by Camagu Mdevulana landing in Samukelo Ngodela’s who guided the ball in the far top corner. It was an end-to-end action with both sides attacking relentlessly. Tuks came close to doubling their lead in the 18th minute.

Trust goal poacher on the day Quintin Stokes-Waller fed a through ball and saw his efforts denied by the TUT shot-stopper Luyanda Mandindi. Stokes-Waller again received a cut-back cross and put his shot wide.

It wasn’t to be for the Pretoria West side in the first half as they looked dangerous on the counter attack. Nare Mojapelo came close to leveling matters with a hot shot inside the box blocked by Koketso Mokou. Tebatso Manyane and Mojapelo combined well with Thuso Mlamla orchestrating the midfield as they kept pressing Tuks but their efforts saw no results as Tuks took a slender 1-0 lead at the interval.

Bushy Moloi’s troops returned from the tunnel looking for an equaliser and derby bragging rights.

Giving Tuks no chances, TUT kept attacking but not converting their chances.

Captain Thuso Mlamla saw his last-minute shot hitting the post. But in the end, Tuks came out victorious in the derby.

Round six of the Varsity Football 2024 tournaments lived up to high expectations as teams jostled for top 4 spots as we enter the business end of the competition.

UFS defeated UWC in Cape Town to climb to the top of the summit while TUT finally came to the party with their first win of the campaign over CUT.

The match between DUT and UP Tuks was postponed due to a power outage in large parts of Pretoria and has been rescheduled for Friday morning. Here’ how the games played out in the matchday wrap.

The defending champions, TUT, finally have the monkey off their backs by claiming a first win of the 2024 Varsity Football campaign. On Thursday night the Red Army beat the CUT 2-1 at the CUT Stadium in Bloemfontein to break their duck.

TUT, who were playing at home, away from home, scored on either side of half-time as they retained their unbeaten record against the Free State outfit, who in turn are still without a victory.

The four-time champions were by far the better team in moving the ball forward against the highly inexperienced team from Bloemfontein.

In addition, CUT, were not doing themselves any favours in their distribution game that seemed stagnant at stages. This allowed TUT to be a lot more dangerous on the attack and they were more successful in entering the box.

The breakthrough game in the 17th minute of the match when Lesedi Nkosi pounced on a fumble by the CUT goalkeeper, Mosiuoa Pejane, but that said he had no support from the defenders who were ball-watching more than anything else.

Towards the latter stages in the first half CUT pressed a bit better and gave themselves more quality ball going forward, but the score remained 1-0 in favour of TUT at the break.

In the second half, CUT showed a lot more intent with the ball, but unfortunately for them so did their opponents.

TUT started playing with a lot more swagger, something that had been missing all season. While TUT never looked like relinquishing the lead, a 66th minute goal from a header by Swazi Kupa sealed the deal.

CUT was however not done yet and for their hard work they were rewarded with a consolation goal by Pule Thekiso three minutes into stoppage time.

Next week, CUT will face UFS in what will be a thrilling Bloemfontein derby to sign off their campaign, while TUT are away to UP-Tuks in another thrilling Tshwane derby.

At the cold UWC Stadium in Bellville, both teams set up an early pace in the first 10 minutes of the game as the home side was the better team who looked promising after a few chances in the visitors' box with the score remained nil nil.

The visitors have adapted quickly to the cold of the venue, and they managed to put pressure on UWC defense with no success. Captain Boy Rantsoti had a clear scoring chance, but his shot went over the crossbar after 20 minutes.

The captain, Rantsoti broke the deadlock after a ball came from his goal kick as UWC failed to clear to take a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for UFS to extend the lead, courtesy of a powerful diving header from Eagan Vollehoven to put the Free State side 2-0 after 40 minutes.

The second half of the game didn’t produce any good results for the home side as they tried to penetrate the UFS defence with no success.

DUT 0-1 UP-Tuks

A wounded UP-Tuks welcomed newcomers DUT at the Tuks Stadium on a chilly and cloudy morning. The Stripe Generation were looking to get back to winning ways after their shocking 2-1 defeat to UWC in round 4.

While the Durbanites were highly motivated going into this encounter after sharing the spoils with defending champions TUT. Tuks enjoyed much of the possession in the opening half.

The three time champions looked sharp on attack with Samukelo Ngodela and Camagu Mdevula pairing well in the midfield. Captain Tshepiso Mahlangu and forward Ntokozo Madela had clear chances to open the scoring but failed to convert their chances. First Mahlangu headed over the posts in the 30th minute with a free header before Madela saw his shot blocked by keeper Xolani Mkhonza in a one-on-one situation.

DUT were not given a chance inside Tuks’ half and the only opportunity occurred when Matome Rangata failed to clear the ball and it fell on Sboniso Sithole but Tuks keeper Jayden van der Walt was up to the task keeping the score 0-0.

Finally Tuks got the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime. The high flying playmaker Samukelo Ngodela found the back of the net with a strike inside the box from a perfectly delivered cross. Tuks took a slender 1-0 lead at the break.

The sides returned from the break with Tuks looking to maintain their advantage and DUT waiting for their luck. Tuks remain rigid at the back keeping DUT at bay and limiting their chances. With no clear chances in the second half Tuks managed to secure maximum points and returned top of the log with a 1-0 win.

Following a rollercoaster season for VUT Men’s Football in last year’s Varsity Football campaign, the Mavuti are licking their wounds and are hoping to make amends on the lessons learnt.

VUT coach Sibusiso Mokondo lamented that the team from the Vaal’s inability to make it through to the knockout phase last season was a big blow.

“It was a bittersweet season indeed (last season) because the aim was to reach the semifinals, but unfortunately we couldn’t,” said Mokondo.

“I think our biggest lesson is to try, this time around, to unite the team and to play as a collective because last season we relied heavily on individuals so we’ve changed that this season.”

VUT is forced to construct in the new life without their talisman Ntokozo Mgidi who was last season’s tournament sensation, awarded for his efforts as he claimed the FNB player of the tournament accolade, and a key player for Mavuti in recent years.

“Unfortunately Ntokozo Mgidi won’t be part of this season’s team due to the age requirement but we have a lot of good players,” adds Mokondo.

Having the status of “good but not good enough” hanging over them for a while now in the Varsity Diski competition, the objective for VUT this season is clear, a semifinal spot, and it is what the men from the Vaal believe they can attain.

“It’s yet another chance and opportunity to showcase what VUT is really made of and the objective this season is to reach the semifinal. We are coming back stronger and better than before” concluded Mokondo.

VUT kick off their campaign against UP-Tuks on Thursday 25 July at TUT Stadium (6:30pm).

It will be a whole new experience for the CPUT Women in Women’s Varsity Football. This year's tournament will see the Cape based side having their first taste of playing among the top universities in the country.

With the tournament set to start on the 26 July, Kamvelihle Mdayi's charges will lock horns against CUT Women in the opening match. All this year's fixtures will take place at TUT Stadium. Speaking with an excited tone ahead of the tournament, head coach Mdayi says for them it's all out about learning things.

"First of all, from us we deem ourselves as a ball playing team, we like to entertain the fan base but also a result based team," said Mdayi.

"Continuity from the USSA games, the majority of our players came to our previous tournament. And this being our first edition of Varsity Football we just want to learn as much as we can and be humble, hard-working, structured and disciplined as you don't know what tomorrow holds for you."

Boasting with young talents, Mdayi says the team has been busy working to improve areas that need a thorough check before the season starts.

He says the side doesn't have new players this season however, but knows the current squad will do the job required."Our build up play and the offensive strengths and discipline without the ball and the offensive and defensive transition phases, those are things we are working on."

"We don't really have new players that are joining us, but a select few newcomers and old folks that have revived their passion for football but the majority it's the old team"

CPUT kick off their campaign against CUT on Friday 26 July at TUT Stadium (12:00).

Defending champions TUT collected their fourth title when they beat UJ in a dramatic penalty shootout (5-4) in the 2023 Varsity Football final at the UJ Soweto Stadium on Thursday.

The teams were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation play.

The Orange Army started the game at a slow pace which worked in favour of TUT.

 The defending champions took the lead in the ninth-minute courtesy of Thuso Mlamla after a silly mistake from UJ defender Karabo Modisane.

The home team then slowly started to gain momentum, having much of the possession and creating chances.

One of these was a header from Ntokozo Mathobela in the 42nd minute that saw a reflex save from the TUT goalkeeper.

The Red Army went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, with the support from an enthusiastic home crowd, UJ managed to get an equalising goal.

This was after great attacking play by Ntokozo Mathobela who delivered a cutback pass to Siphosihle Nkambule who put the ball in the back of the net.

Towards the end of the game, both sides were looking for their second goal to put the game to rest and lift the trophy.

TUT’s Ronald Mabaso, the 2023 Golden Boot winner, missed from 10 yards out.

After the regulation 90 minutes, the scores were level at 1-1.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, the Red Army held their nerve to outscore the Orange Army 5-4 and be crowned the 2023 Varsity Football champions for the second year running.

UJ will take on NWU in Johannesburg and UWC will take on defending champions TUT in Cape Town next Thursday (14 September) in the semifinals of the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football competition.

In the last round-robin matches, the Orange Army beat TUT, UWC claimed victory over VUT, NWU got one over UFH and UFS beat CUT.

UJ 1-1 TUT

In the battle of the log leaders, UJ and defending champions TUT played to a thrilling 1-1 draw at the UJ Soweto Stadium.

The game started off very well with both teams playing a great match of football, there was nice ball rotation and a well-managed tempo. The first 20 minutes was equally balanced as they were trying to find their feet.

The Orange Army made a forced substitution 22 minutes into the game after captain Makoti Maselesele picked up a head injury following a collusion with Tshiamo Mahome in the middle of the park.

The home side got an opening goal in the 46th minute, courtesy of Mongezi Mncube who scored after combining well with Malik Mashinini who walked away with an assist. TUT’s Tshiamo Mahome levelled proceedings in the 75th minute minutes when he scored a cracker just outside the 18 yards area.

The result of the match was that both teams progressed to the semifinals.

UWC 4-2 VUT

A 4-2 win for UWC over VUT at the UWC Stadium has given the Cape based side a home semifinal next week against defending champions TUT.

Lwando Mdleleni's charges had one task in mind coming into the match, to win so that they could qualify for the semifinals. And they started on the right foot when central midfielder Damian Overmeyer broke the deadlock in the 29th minute scoring from a UWC set piece just outside the VUT box on the right side.

UWC continued to showcase good quality football and despite the halftime score of 1-0, VUT didn’t sit back feeling sorry for themselves.

Shortly after returning to the field for the second half, the visitors shocked the home side when Ntokozo Mgidi scored a fast goal to make it 1-1. Mdleleni's side were not done however as they managed to score two quick goals through Riyaaz Koopstadt and Leandro de Sousa to give UWC a comfortable lead.

Craig Joemath netted the fourth goal for UWC from a corner kick in the 78th minute to make it 4-1. VUT's Kgotso Nhlapo scored a consolation goal just before the end of the match.

NWU 2-1 UFH

NWU travelled all the way to the Davidson Stadium in the Eastern Cape to hand UFH a 2-1 defeat on home turf and secure a semifinal spot.

In the first few minutes of the game, both teams were aggressive, throwing everything they had at each other. They were playing a passing game and hunting for open spaces. The quantity of yellow cards issued early in the game demonstrated the intensity of the game.

NWU’s Reatlegile Kgosithebe goal, scored from a tap-in with a quality cross from Heaven Sereetsi, gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.

Early in the second half, UFH set the tone by moving the ball fast to reach their striker Sinobom Kapase. The visitors attempted to slow the game down in order to break UFH's momentum, but the home team was unbeatable at that moment. Kapase, who unleashed a cracker in the box to find the back of the net 15 minutes into the second half, scored for the home team.

Reatlegile scored his second goal of the match, showing power as he made a terrific turn in between two UFH defenders and put the ball into the back of the net, to secure the victory.

The fact that both teams wanted to win was a tremendous highlight of the game. The home team deserves credit for their efforts.

UFS 4-1 CUT

UFS saved their best for last with a 4-1 win over city rivals CUT at Shimla Park.

With NWU and UWC winning earlier in the day, UFS’ chances of reaching the semifinals for the third straight year were dashed, but this didn’t stop them from playing a high intensity game.

In typical derby fashion it was end-to-end stuff by both teams, especially going into the game knowing that it was nothing more than a dead rubber and the only real prize on offer was the bragging rights.

The scoring was opened in the 10th minute with Sambulo Sithole, steering a rebound into the back of the net. The joy was short lived as a lap in concentration saw Lesego Mafikeng score an own goal as he tried to pass the ball back to the goalkeeper, Tisetso Seodinyane.

UFS had a chance to regain the lead, but captain Aphiwe Zulu missed a penalty that was awarded for a hand ball. Close to halftime however, Sithole pounced on another rebound to see the hosts take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Shortly after halftime, Omphemetse Athibeng scored a third goal for UFS to give them a healthy lead. Deep into stoppage time striker Boy Rantsoti carved he way through the CUT defence to score the Lions’ fourth goal to drive the final nail into the CUT coffin.
