Mamelodi Sundowns coach Tiro Van Rooyen faces a precarious yet pivotal encounter against a faltering Chippa United. With the stakes high, Sundowns, currently perched in second place, must navigate this tricky test at Tuks Stadium on Saturday morning to keep their championship aspirations firmly alive.
Chippa United, languishing at the bottom of the table with a mere 18 points from 26 matches, has struggled to find their footing this season. In contrast, Sundowns are riding a wave of momentum, boasting an impressive six-match winning streak that has propelled them to 57 points, just six points behind league leaders Orlando Pirates, who have amassed 63 points.
Van Rooyen acknowledges the potential danger posed by their underperforming opponents. “We are approaching our weekend match against Chippa with utmost respect,” he said.
“They have nothing to lose, and that unpredictability can be very dangerous for us. We need to exhibit unwavering character and a strong mentality to secure maximum points. A defeat could seriously jeopardize our title hopes.”
With only five matches left for Sundowns, Van Rooyen insists that each game is a cup final. “We need to remain mentally and emotionally resilient,” he noted.
“Every match is crucial, and we understand that things can quickly unravel.”
As the clock ticks down, Sundowns will also contend with the unique challenge of playing two matches within just four days. After facing Chippa, they will prepare to clash with Polokwane City on Tuesday morning, a fixture that was previously postponed.
“This presents a unique but interesting situation,” Van Rooyen stated.
“We want to seize the positives from each challenge. This period could define whether we get it right or wrong. We’re focused on running the marathon until the finish line and maintaining our consistency along the way”.
