Former champions Nigeria and South Africa headline the list of ten countries who, on Tuesday, all booked a berth at next year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Defending champions Nigeria made heavy work of their qualifying tie against neighbours Benin, drawing 1-1 in Abeokuta but going through 3-1 on aggregate after away success in the first leg last week.

Ashleigh Plumptre scored her first international goal for Nigeria in the 12th minute, but Benin’s Yasminath Djibril equalised on the hour mark for a morale-boosting away draw.

Banyana Banyana scored a late goal through the returning Thembi Kgatlana, who missed the Cup of Nations finals in Morocco earlier this year, to edge the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto and progress 2-1 on aggregate.

There was a shock win for the Cape Verde Islands, who will be going to the finals for the first time, along with Malawi, who will also be debutants.

Cape Verde lost the home leg of their tie against Mali 1-0 last Friday but bounced back in Bamako on Tuesday to win 4-2 after storming into a 3-0 halftime lead over the 2024 quarterfinalists.

Malawi, with French-based Tabitha Chawinga in the line-up, were 2-0 home winners over Anola in Blantyre to secure their first-ever trip to the finals. Faith Chimzimu scored both goals.

The other teams to qualify were Algeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and Tanzania, while Zambia had booked their place at the weekend when they beat Namibia.

Algeria upset Cameroon, who have been four-time runners-up at Wafcon, but now miss out on a second successive finals tournament.

Algeria had a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg but upset Cameroon 1-0 away in Douala on Tuesday. The only goal came from Marine Dafeur’s deflected shot in the 24th minute.

Morocco will host the 12-team tournament in March, only nine months after the last Cup of Nations finals, which had been postponed a year.

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals also serve as the qualifiers for the next World Cup in Brazil in 2027.

The Nigerian women's national football team touched down in the capital Monday for an audience with the president, fresh off their weekend Africa Cup of Nations victory over Morocco.

The Super Falcons, winners of Saturday's Women's Africa Cup of Nations final, were greeted on the tarmac at Abuja's international airport by traditional dancers, drummers and a swarm of journalists and government officials.

They then departed in a convoy escorted by security to meet with President Bola Tinubu.

The women brought with them their 10th Wafcon trophy, the culmination of years of dominance at the continental level despite struggles at home over late payments and pay disparities with the men's team.

To grab the gold, the Super Falcons mounted a stunning comeback from a seemingly fatal 2-0 deficit, winning 3-2 over their Wafcon hosts in Rabat.

Ahead of the match, it was announced that Tinubu had personally approved players' tournament bonus payments. The seemingly routine measure has in the past been anything but, with the Super Falcons butting heads with the Nigeria Football Federation over unpaid bonuses after their 2023 Women's World Cup run.

Fans in recent years have also called for the team to be paid the same as the men's team, the Super Eagles.

At the presidential villa, Tinubu announced that players would be given a three-bedroom apartment as well as a $100 000 cash bonus.

"We could not be prouder," the president said, adding that he "didn't want to watch the match" at one point because of the stress.

PROBLEMS 'DROWNED' BY VICTORY

Despite the challenges, the team has made an appearance in every women's World Cup since the tournament debuted in 1991.

"Nigeria is the best country, with the best women's national football team," said Paul Edeh, chairman of the Benue State Football Association, who was at the airport to greet the team Monday.

"What these girls have been able to achieve... the kind of trophies they've brought to us, we've not seen that with the male team," he told AFP.

While watch parties erupted in cheers across the country Saturday evening, the overall reaction in the country of some 220 million was relatively muted.

Most of the crowd greeting the players as they touched down were airport workers, government officials and journalists.

Though the government promised "the streets of Abuja" would "be agog" during a citywide parade, ultimately, plans were pared back.

For many fans, however, the team got its proper roses with Saturday's trophy, which also served as a temporary relief from the country's many crises, from jihadist insurgency to spiralling inflation.

Muhammad Awwal, a taxi driver in Kano, told AFP over the weekend that the women helped Nigerians "momentarily forget our common problems".

"All our problems were drowned in the frenzy of celebration of the spectacular win," he said.

The 3-2 victory against hosts Morocco in Rabat confirmed the west Africans as the queens of women's football in Africa as they pulled off a 10th title in 13 editions.

Tinubu said the team's "spectacular performance... exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit".

The Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback from being two goals down to beat Morocco on Saturday night.

"You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation," Tinubu told the team in a post-match video call.

"You have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. Nigeria celebrates you."

Dubbed Mission X, the Wafcon title was a tonic for many Nigerians enduring the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation as the government carries out reforms.

Muhammad Awwal, a taxi driver who relocated to the northern city of Kano to escape the violence of Borno state, the epicentre of the jihadist insurgency, hailed the Falcons for helping Nigerians to "momentarily forget our common problems".

"Everywhere people erupted in celebration after the final whistle. All our problems were drowned in the frenzy of celebration of the spectacular win," Awwal told AFP.

"Last night all the problems tormenting us - the high cost of living, banditry and Boko Haram violence - disappeared.

"It was a great relief, thanks to the Falcons," he said.

Abuja housewife Comfort Zamani, agreed: "Life has not been easy, but at least the girls helped us to forget the hardships even if for only a few hours," she told AFP.

"They have given us some hope that we should keep fighting and not give up even when things are rough."

In the densely-populated neigbourhoods of Dako, Kabusa and Galadimawa of the Nigerian capital Abuja, loud cheers tore through the late night to celebrate Nigeria's two comeback goals.

But the loudest cheers were heard when substitute Jennifer Echegini swept home a free kick with only two minutes left on the clock for the championship-winning goal, and then at fulltime.

Sunday newspaper carried front page headlines such as "Unstoppable Falcons win 10th Wafcon from two goals down" and "Super Falcons rule Africa again".

Chairman of the country's supporters club Vincent Okumagba further congratulated the players "for accomplishing 'Mission X'" and for for "not giving up when they were down".

Every edition of Wafcon pulses with history in the making and the 2025 tournament held in Morocco gave us exactly that: drama, redemption, heartbreak, and unmistakable signs of continental evolution.

Losing two finals back-to-back might break some teams. Not Morocco. Under Jorge Vilda, they lost 3–2 to Nigeria in front of 45 000+ fans at home but walked away with their heads high and their future brighter.

From tears to triumph, Morocco isn’t knocking on the door, they’re kicking it down.

 

 

Nigeria came from two goals down to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday night – completing ‘Mission X’ by claiming their 10th continental crown.

Goals in the opening quarter of the match from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy put the Atlas Lionesses in control and seemingly on course to exorcise the ghosts of the 2022 final (also on home soil) when they were beaten by South Africa.

As for the Super Falcons, their meek first-half showing was replaced by a more intense and focused effort after the break, which saw them level the game at 2-2 through a penalty from Esther Okoronkwo and close-range strike from Folashade Ijamilusi.

And substitute Jennifer Echegini then wrote herself into African football history with a goal in the 88th minute, sealing a record-extending 10th title as Nigeria returned to the summit of women’s football on the continent.

The teams traded half chances in the opening stages, but Morocco drew first blood via captain Ghizlane Chebbak in the 13th minute, as the veteran whipped home a right-footed shot from the ‘D’ of Nigeria’s penalty area after a spell of sustained pressure.

And just over 10 minutes later the Atlas Lionesses doubled their lead, with Sanaa Mssoudy striking home a low, left-footed effort after a hopeful cross from the right had found it’s way to the FAR Rabat forward.

Nigeria upped their game through the remainder of the first half, though they created no clear chances with which to test out Morocco goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi, leaving the score 2-0 in favour of the host nation at the interval.

GREAT COMEBACK

The second half settled into a similar pattern as the end of the first, with Nigeria dominating possession and forcing Morocco to sit deep in defence – though the North Africans threatened through their pace, especially from Sakina Ouzraoui, on the counter attack.

The Super Falcons shuffled their pack with the introductions of Jennifer Echegini and Rinsola Babajide just before the hour mark, and in the 63rd minute their attacking pressure paid dividends with the award of a penalty (after a VAR review) for hand-ball from Morocco defender Nouhaila Benzina.

Esther Okoronkwo scored from the spot to bring the West Africans right back into the contest at 1-2.

And Okoronkwo played a key role in the equalising goal in the 71st minute, driving into the penalty area before unselfishly teeing up Folashade Ijamilusi, who struck home at close range for 2-2.

All momentum appeared to be with the Super Falcons, but in the 79th minute Morocco were awarded a penalty of their own for a hand-ball from defender Oluwatosin Demehin.

However, the referee reversed her decision after a VAR review – much to the annoyance of the home supporters.

And Nigeria then completed the comeback with a third goal, arriving in the 88th minute when Echegini swept home Okoronkwo’s free kick delivery to make it 3-2 and complete ‘Mission X’ for the Super Falcons.

Nigeria coach Justin Madugu is faced with going up against a World Cup-winning coach when his side meets Morocco in Saturday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, but he insists he is sticking to his guns and refusing to be overawed.

Morocco are coached by Jorge Vilda, who took Spain to the 2023 Women’s World Cup success but was then fired soon after in the wake of the ‘kissing’ scandal that engulfed the Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales afterwards.

Vilda was then hired by Morocco and has led them to Saturday’s final in Rabat where they will attempt to win the continental title for the first time at the expense of a Nigeria side who have won a record nine titles and never lost a previous Wafcon final.

“We know it's not just going to be about going out on the pitch and playing, we must prepare for every scenario. We are fully aware of that. Experience has taught us many things,” Madugu told Friday’s pre-final press conference.

“We have our own game plans and we are sticking to our game plan, but also we know what we can expect from (the Morocco coach) tomorrow,” he added.

“I hope that the omen of never having lost a previous final continues tomorrow, however, we know all these scenarios are always different. Scenarios can never be the same.

“It will be a new scenario, we are playing against a top team and we know what they can do. We are also aware of the calibre of their coach and what they’ve all done to get themselves to where they are today.

“But, like I said, we believe in ourselves, we believe in our players, we trust what we are doing, and we’ll stick to our game plan,” he continued.

Nigeria have been far from impressive at times in the tournament, but conceded only once, when they gave up a penalty against South Africa in the semifinal in Casablanca on Tuesday.

“We have prepared as best we can for the final, although the interval between the games has been pretty short, so we’ve had to do our best despite the circumstances and we are fully prepared for tomorrow,” added Madugu.

“When you play in games like this, they always come with pressure, but you also have the desire, given that you’ve got to the final, that you really want to make it and you are going hard to try and get to where you want to be, the dream of carrying that trophy.

“Yes, we are preparing very well in all aspects … in all aspects … mentally, psychologically, whatever it is that we are anticipating, we are taking care of it,” he promised Nigerian fans.

Morocco coach Jorge Vilda believes his side have the right mental fortitude to overcome a physically stronger Nigeria side when the two countries meet in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) final on Saturday.

Vila, who took Spain to Women’s World Cup success two years ago, called his side a “team of champions” on the eve of the clash in Rabat.

“They are a psychologically strong team and I’ve been very proud of the way we never give up. We have overcome some sticky situations up to no. The champions are the players who have helped us to reach our objectives.”

The Spaniard insisted Morocco would be mentally tough to take on the reputation of Nigeria.

“The psychological aspect overrides the physical one in games like this.

“Nigeria has strong physical players with very outstanding players in terms of their individual qualities. They play in big leagues and have won the trophy many times,” Vilda added.

“Nigeria have showed a lot of improvement through the tournament and overcome some very difficult teams, but we are going to face them without any inferiority complex.”

Vilda revealed that striker Fatima Tagnaout was a doubt for the final and faced a fitness test later on Friday when they have their final training session before the final.

For captain Ghislaine Chebbak it will be a second successive final after the disappointment of losing at home to South Africa three years ago.

“Our efforts got us through to this stage and we’re very keen to play the final, especially against such a well-known side as Nigeria,” she said on Friday at the pre-match press conference.

“We played them in the semifinal at the last tournament, and we know it’s going to be a big and great side and we are going to have to overcome.”

Host nation Morocco and historical tournament queens Nigeria will meet for an epic Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday night.

Morocco sealed their final berth on Tuesday night with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Ghana, having been held 1-1 by the Black Queens through 120 minutes.

The Atlas Lionesses looked in trouble through a Ghana-dominated first half, but some smart tactical changes from coach Jorge Vilda saw them boss the game from the second half onwards – levelling via Sakina Ouzraoui – and they were emphatic and confident in dispatching four straight penalties in front of a supportive crowd.

“The Ghanaian team were physical but we played collectively and eventually won,” said Vilda.

“We worked hard to make it to the final. I am thinking about the Nigerian team that we will be playing in the final.”

Nigeria earned their place in the final with a dramatic 2-1 win over South Africa in the first semifinal on Tuesday, with Michelle Alozie scoring the decisive goal deep into injury time.

The Super Falcons are seeking a record-extending 10th WAFCON title – the ambition dubbed ‘Mission X’ – and key player Jennifer Echegini said they are embracing their chance at adding to the team’s unmatched legacy at the tournament.

“Nigeria has won this competition multiple times,” explained Echegini. “As the new generation, it’s our duty to carry on that tradition. So yes, there’s pressure. But everyone – the fans, the staff, us – wants the same thing: victory.”

Morocco and Nigeria have met just once before in the WAFCON: the Atlas Lionesses defeated the Super Falcons 5-4 on penalties in the semifinals of the 2022 edition after the teams had played out a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

South Africa's title defence came to an end on Tuesday when they were beaten 2-1 by Nigeria in the semi-finals - their first loss in 10 matches at the continental showpiece.

Ellis's side had gone through the 2022 edition undefeated on their way to winning the coveted trophy for the first time, but the Super Falcons had their number on this occasion.

The Wafcon 2022 champions had suffered a devastating blow in the closing stages of the clash in Casablanca after Salgado sustained a horrific injury and left the pitch on a stretcher.

Banyana Banyana have already claimed victory over the Black Queens in the group stages (a 2-0 win on 7 July) and Ellis wants a repeat performance to finish their campaign in Morocco on a high.

Ghana could be affected by fatigue after they were taken to extra time in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Kim Bjorkegren's side overcame Algeria 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw on 19 July, but they weren't able to reproduce the same composure from the spot three days later after succumbing to Morocco 4-2 in the shootout.

The West Africans have only managed to keep that one clean sheet in five games, with their last-four tie against the Atlas Lionesses finishing 1-1 after extra time.

Ghana - Grace Asantewaa became more and more influential for her team as the tournament wore on and she was immense against the Fennecs in the last eight to be named Player of the Match following a standout performance. The 24-year-old midfielder played the entire 120 minutes against Morocco once more and she'll no doubt be pulling the strings in the clash with Banyana Banyana.

South Africa - Linda Motlhalo has a perfect record from the spot at Wafcon 2024 and you can bet that if Banyana Banyana win a penalty in the third-placed playoff, she won't shirk that responsibility. The 27-year-old winger made no mistake from 12 yards out against the Black Queens in the group stages and she was also successful with her spot-kick against the Super Falcons, meaning she is her country's leading scorer in Morocco.

South Africa coach Desiree Ellis will decide on her future when she returns home next week after the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals, preferring to concentrate on Friday’s third-place play-off match first.

Ellis would not be drawn into any discussion on her future amid much speculation that she is planning to step down at the end of the tournament in Morocco, where South Africa lost their crown after being beaten in Tuesday’s semifinal by Nigeria.

“Look, all I'm looking forward to is the game tomorrow,” she told the pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Ghana in Casablanca for the bronze medal.

“Obviously, when we get back home, I’ll take a little bit of a break and we’ll sit down and then see the way forward from there,” said Ellis.

Ellis has been Banyana coach since 2016 and won the Wafcon in Morocco three years ago, which was the country’s first success in the tournament after decades of coming close. She also took South Africa to their first World Cup in France in 2019 and again to the last finals in Australia and New Zealand.

The 62-year-old Ellis, a former captain of the national team, admitted it would be difficult to lift the team’s spirits after losing 2-1 to the Super Falcons and seeing attacker Gabby Salgado suffer a double leg fracture.

“Obviously, the ambition was to get to the final and go back-to-back, so it’s a bit of disappointment not reaching (the final), but obviously we still have a game to play and we want to end up on a high note.

“We've played against Ghana and it's always difficult to play the same side twice in the tournament. But we'll give it our best shot,” Ellis said.

Despite relinquishing their crown as continental champions, Ellis praised the bravery and resilience of her side, who came into the clash battle-weary yet undeterred after a gruelling 120-minute epic and penalty shootout against Senegal in the quarterfinals.

On Tuesday night, under the floodlights of Casablanca’s Larbi Zaouli Stadium, South Africa went toe-to-toe with the record-holding Super Falcons but fell just short. Goals from Nigerian captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie sealed the win for the West Africans, while Linda Motlhalo kept Banyana in the fight with a well-taken penalty.

The defeat brought an end to Banyana's impressive 15-match unbeaten run in open play at Wafcon - every match under the watchful eye and guiding hand of Ellis.

A turning point came late in the second half after Gabby Salgado was stretchered off following a lengthy medical stoppage. Her replacement, Sibulele Holweni, stepped in, but Nigeria capitalised in the aftermath. While South Africa held 54.5 per cent of possession and completed 100 more passes than their opponents (266 to 166), the final scoreline favoured the Falcons.

'WE SHOWED CHARACTER AND INTENT'

“We had chances - Jermaine was through, Hilda was through, Nox was through. We didn’t look like a team that had played 120 minutes days ago,” Ellis reflected. “We matched Nigeria blow for blow. We showed character and intent, but in the end, they found the goals and that made the difference.”

Her pride in the squad was unwavering: “After Gabby’s injury, we struggled to regain momentum. I’m not sure how serious it is yet, but it clearly disrupted us. Credit to Nigeria, they stayed focused. We wish them well in the final.”

Nigeria will face hosts Morocco in Rabat on Saturday, while South Africa stay behind in Casablanca for the bronze-medal showdown against Ghana, who were edged out by Morocco on penalties.

Ellis insisted the third-place match means far more than just a consolation prize.

“We came to defend our title and create history. That didn’t happen, but there’s still something to fight for. We want to win that medal, for Gabby, who’s going home injured, and for ourselves. It’s not just a playoff, it’s a chance to leave with pride and purpose.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Amogelang Motau has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. She picked up an injury against Senegal and missed the semifinal, but will stay on with the team through the closing stages.

Morocco have set up a title showdown against Nigeria in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after they defeated Ghana 4-2 on penalties in the second semifinal, played at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night.

The Atlas Lionesses and Black Queens played out a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes, with Stella Nyamekye and Sakina Ouzraoui netting for the West and North African teams respectively.

The tournament hosts were then able to hold their nerve in the penalty shootout, giving them a chance to exorcise the demons of their 2022 WAFCON final loss on home soil at the hands of South Africa.

Ghana started the stronger of the two teams, stringing together some promising attacks that saw them twice test out Morocco goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi in the opening quarter hour with long-range shots.

The Black Queens then duly claimed the lead in the 26th minute: Afua Josephine Bonsu Kyerewaa powered a great header on target, only for Errmichi to make a finger-tip save to direct the ball onto the post – it then ran along the goal line before being turned home by Stella Nyamekye for 1-0.

The Atlas Lionesses responded by making a tactical substitution which saw Elodie Nakkach replaced by Najat Badri in midfield.

However, Ghana continued to look the better team up to half time, heading into the interval fully deserving of their one-goal lead – and perhaps frustrated that they had not added to it.

Morocco upped their game in the second half and nearly equalised in the 52nd minute, with Badri letting fly with a left-footed shot that forced a sharp save from Ghana goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan.

The hosts capitalised on their next chance, though, as Sakina Ouzraoui showed great anticipation and composure to attack a looping ball in the Ghanaian penalty area ahead of Konlan, and then stab home to make it 1-1 in the 55th minute.

The remainder of regulation time passed without any major goal-scoring opportunities at either end, though Morocco certainly created more attacking pressure up to the final whistle.

And the Atlas Lionesses continued that trend in extra time, though Ghana remained resilient in defence and offered a sporadic threat on the counter attack to keep the tournament hosts on their toes.

Ultimately the match closed with the teams locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, followed by a shootout in which Morocco converted four straight penalties, while Ghana scored their first two but Evelyn Badu and Comfort Yeboah both failed to hit the back of the net, leaving the Atlas Lionesses to celebrate a dramatic triumph.

Michelle Alozie’s winner four minutes into injury-time handed Nigeria a 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa in Casablanca on Tuesday to claim a place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Rasheedat Ajibade had given the Super Flacons the lead from the penalty-spot in the first half, before South Africa struck back with a spot-kick of their own in the second period via Linda Motlhalo.

Just as it seemed extra-time would be needed, Alozie floated a cross deep into the box and under pressure from two Nigerian forwards, South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini allowed the ball to pass her and into the net.

Nigeria were the dominant side in the first half, but South Africa looked the more likely to go on and win it in the second before being stung by conceding so late on.

Jennifer Echegini flashed a shot just wide of goal from the edge of the box, before Nigeria somehow failed to take the lead on 11 minutes when South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini saved from point-blank range to deny Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo’s shot was blocked on the line by Tiisetso Makhubela.

South Africa created some half-chances, first Jermaine Seoposenwe’s shot was tame, and then Hildah Magaia had a better opportunity but scuffed her shot across goal and wide.

Nigeria were handed a penalty on 44 minutes when 20’s shot struck the outstretched arm of Banyana’s Bambanani Mbane and referee Shamirah Nabadda pointed to the spot.

Goalkeeper Dlamini got a strong hand to the penalty, but Ajibade’s low shot deflected into the right-hand corner of the net.

South Africa had a fortunate moment early in the second period when Dlamini explicably dropped the ball from a routine cross, but they were able to scramble the ball away from danger.

South Africa received a penalty of their own when an on-rushing Magaia was held back in the box by Osinachi Ohale and after a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and Motlhalo made no mistake.

It was the first goal conceded by Nigeria in the tournament and some redemption for Motlhalo, who missed a vital spot-kick against the Super Falcons in a shootout in the 2018 final.

Banyana had an excellent chance to take the lead when Noxolo Cesane latched onto a cross in the box, but as her goal-bound shot trickled towards the net, it was stopped on the line by a Nigerian defender.

Seoposenwe then curled a shot over the top as South Africa began to create the better chances as the clock ticked to 90 minutes.

A horrific leg injury to Gabriela Salgado during a scramble in the box left players on both sides in tears and shaken, with several of the South Africans needing to be consoled by coaching staff.

Captain Refiloe Jane stayed with Salgado as she received lengthy treatment before being stretchered off.

Morocco will face Ghana in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) semifinal at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, as the nation’s quest to lift the trophy on home soil continues.

Morocco edged Zambia on goal difference to claim top spot in group A after claiming seven points. The hosts drew 2-2 with Zambia in the tournament’s opening fixture before beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 4-2 and sneaking past Senegal 1-0.

The Atlas Lionesses put on a dominant display in their quarterfinal against Mali, as Ibtissam Jraïdi bagged a brace and Kenza Chapelle added another in the 89th minute. They were unable to keep a clean sheet, as Mali’s Aissata Traoré grabbed a consolation goal deep into stoppage time.

Ghana finished second place in group C thanks to a 4-1 victory over Tanzania and South Africa, who defeated Mali 4-0 to put Ghana above their fellow west-Africa nation. In their previous group games, Ghana lost to South Africa 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Mali.

The Black Queens advanced to the semifinals after defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties after going goalless in regulation and extra time.

Ghana are looking to advance to the final for the first time since 2006.

The Atlas Lionesses’ captain leads all goalscorers at the tournament with Senegal’s Nguenar Ndiaye, having netted four times in four games. She rescued her side with a late equaliser against Zambia in the opening game before scoring a hat-trick against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Ghana: Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah - Boye-Hlorkah presents a dangerous threat for the Moroccan defence. The 29-year-old has registered one goal and one assist in four games so far and will be looking to spoil the host’s party on Tuesday.

South Africa and Senegal could not be separated after 120 minutes in their quarter-final tie at the Honneur Stadium on Saturday and the defending champions marched on following a 4-1 win in the shootout.

It was the first time that Ellis' side failed to get on the scoresheet, although they kept another clean sheet - their third in four matches - with goalkeeper Andile Dlamini yet to concede a single goal, having not played in the 1-1 draw with Tanzania.

The Wafcon 2022 winners are now unbeaten in their last 10 games at the continental showpiece and Ellis insists they know what it takes to beat the Super Falcons after knocking them out at the same stage three years ago.

However, she has raised concerns about tired legs as her players only have two days to recover, while they have to travel 609km to get from Oujda to Casablanca.

Nigeria are also still undefeated in Morocco and they sent out a statement of intent after demolishing Zambia 5-0 in the last eight on Friday.

Justin Madugu's side took their tally for the tournament to nine goals as a result, making them the second-highest scorers behind the Atlas Lionesses (10), while their defence has been on point after not being breached even once.

However, the record 11-time African champions have only managed to prevent Banyana Banyana from scoring twice in their last five Wafcon meetings, shipping four goals in the process.

The 2023 and 2024 CAF Women's Goalkeeper of the Year is in the running to be named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament after keeping four consecutive clean sheets.

South Africa - Dlamini has been by far the busier of the two keepers as she's made 13 saves in three outings, two more than at Wafcon 2022 when she played twice as many games. She also played a starring role against the Lionesses of Teranga after saving Nguenar Ndiaye and Meta Kande's spot-kicks in the shootout.

Later that same evening, Banyana Banyana remained on course to defend their title after they defeated Senegal 4-1 on penalties at the Honneur Stadium.

Following 120 minutes of goalless football, Andile Dlamini rose to the occasion for Desiree Ellis' side as she saved two spot-kicks, while Karabo Dhlamini, Tiisetso Makhubela, Gabriela Salgado and Bambanani Mbane all held their nerve to clinch victory in the shootout.

The Lionesses of Teranga, on the other hand, bowed out of the competition in the quarterfinals for the second time. Mali, Zambia and Algeria are the other three losers in the quarterfinals of Africa's biggest women's football tournament.

The Lionesses of Teranga were brave from the start as they pushed forward in numbers. Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Ayanda Dlamini denied Nguenar Ndiaye in the third minute and Haby Balde in the 29th minute.

At the other end, Adji Ndiaye was looking shaky between the sticks as the goalkeeper made several unforced errors. South Africa were presented with a chance to score in first-half stoppage time, but Karabo Dhlamini's free-kick was well saved by Adji Ndiaye and the score was 0-0 at halftime.

Banyana enjoyed the bulk of possession after the restart, but coach Desiree Ellis' charges found it difficult to breach the Senegalese defence, which looked solid and compact. Ultimately, the game ended in a 0-0 draw in regulation time, and extra time followed.

There were no goals in extra time as the two teams struggled to create clear-cut chances and the game had to be decided by a dreaded penalty shootout. Dlamini became Banyana's heroine during the penalty shootout, as she saved two spot-kicks to earn South Africa a 4-1 win on penalties.

Ghana’s Black Queens booked a semifinal meeting with hosts Morocco at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals after edging Algeria on post-match penalties in their quarterfinal in Berkane on Saturday.

Ghana won 4-2 on spot kicks after the tie ended goalless after 120 minutes – the third successive match that Algerians have played to a 0-0 draw.

It was a deserved victory for the West Africans, who were the more enterprising, but ran into a strong Algerian defence. Astonishingly, they depart the tournament without conceding a goal in their four matches but having scored just once.

Algeria’s keeper Chloe Ngazi might have kept her goal intact throughout, but she was beaten by each of Ghana’s penalty takers, who all successfully shot high to her right.

Instead, it was Ghana goalkeeper Cynthia Komlan who emerged the hero despite having relatively little to do all afternoon when she stopped kicks from both Marine Dafeur and Ines Belloumou.

Ghana did have the ball in the net in the first half, but their 27th-minute effort was ruled out after a VAR check. Chantelle Boyd-Hlorkah was marginally offside before running onto a pass, squaring the ball inside the Algerian area to which Doris Boaduwaa failed to connect, but Stella Nyamekye picked up to slam it into the net.

Ghana had a good opportunity earlier in the 13th minute when Princess Dankwa was in with a chance, but she put her shot wide. Dankwa had won the ball inside the Algerian area but looked to elbow Morgane Belkhiter in the face and was fortunate that there was no VAR check, which could have earned her more than just the yellow card she received.

ERROR-STREWN SECOND HALF

Ghana had two free-kick opportunities in an error-strewn second half but fired both of them straight at a solid Algerian wall. The Black Queens were again the more enterprising of the two teams, but Algeria always had enough players behind the ball to stymie them.

Algeria’s Amira Ould Braham should have been the first sending off of the tournament when she lashed out in an off-the-ball incident, aiming a kick at the shins of an opponent, but surprisingly only received a yellow.

Boyd-Hlorkah might have broken the deadlock in the 100th when free at the back post but failed to control the free-kick hit at her, while four minutes later, at the other end of the pitch, a tired-looking Gnouthia Karchouni struck her shot over the top of the goal.

Algeria’s best chance came a minute later as Nouhed Naili found herself free on goal, only for defender Sudan Duah to get back and make a superb tackle to deny the Algerian substitute a chance to shoot from close range.

Ghana’s semifinal against Morocco will be played in Rabat on Tuesday.

Later on Saturday, hosts South Africa are taking on Senegal in Oudja in the last of the quarterfinal clashes. The winner will meet Nigeria in the last four in Casablanca on Tuesday.

But the expected goal avalanche did not come as Mali turned the contest into a feisty affair as neither side was able to hold onto possession.

Mali had the ball in the Morocco net from a first-half freekick from Aissta Samaka but were pulled back for offside and there was always the chance they would get an equaliser before the outcome was effectively settled in the 79th minute.

By the time Mali goalkeeper Fatoumata Karantao made a horror error for Morocco’s third goal on the stroke of halftime, the contest was effectively over.

Her slip allowed Kenza Capelle to claim a goal.

But the hosts were unable to keep a clean sheet as Mali got a last-gasp penalty of their own for a consolation goal.

A handball allowed Aissata Traore to net for her second goal of the tournament.

Morocco now await the identity of their semifinal opponents, who will be either Algeria or Ghana, who meet in Berkane on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, Nigeria had thumped Zambia 5-0 and they now meet either defending champions South Africa or Senegal.

Nigeria eased into the semifinals of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco with a thumping 5-0 victory over one of the pre-tournament favourites Zambia in their last-8 clash in Casablanca on Friday.

Goals from Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Oluwatosin Demehin and Folashade Ijamilusi capped a commanding performance from the Super Falcons, who maintain their record of reaching the semifinals, at least, of every WAFCON finals played.

It was some revenge for the record nine-time winners, who were beaten 1-0 by Zambia in the bronze medal match three years ago having lost their semifinal to South Africa.

They will now meet the winner of the fourth quarterfinal on Saturday between South Africa and Senegal in the last-4 at the same Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Tuesday. They will vie for a place in the final which is to be staged in Rabat on July 26

Nigeria were virtually out of sight by halftime as they held a 3-0 lead following a dominant opening period.

It took them just 90 second to hit the front as Ohale steered her header from Okoronkwo’s cross into the corner of the net.

Okoronkwo went from provider to scorer as she added the second on 33 minutes, collecting a ball on the edge of the six-yard box and was given far too much time to turn and shoot low past Ngambo Musole in the Zambian goal.

Things got worse for the Copper Queens on the brink of halftime as they failed to deal with a long ball from Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Ihezuo was able to run onto the loose ball and provide a calm finish beyond a helpless Musole.

That settled the game as a contest, but there were still two more goals for the Nigerians as a free-kick was floated into the box and Demehin rose highest to head home from inside the six-yard box.

Ijamilusi netted her first WAFCON goal when she tapped home unopposed at the back post to put the cherry on time of a superb team performance.

Zambia, who had such high hopes coming into the tournament, failed to fire when it mattered most and did not manage a single shot on target through the 90 minutes.

Nigeria have still yet to conceded a goal in Morocco, but had only scored four goals in their three games coming into this one.

Coach Justin Justin Madugu will hope his side is now firing on all cylinders at both ends of the pitch heading into the business end of the competition.
