Coach Dr Desiree Ellis admits selecting Banyana Banyana's final squad for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been one of the toughest tasks ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
Ellis addressed the media during the team's open training session at the University of Johannesburg Sports Grounds in Auckland Park on Wednesday as preparations intensified ahead of the continental showpiece, which runs from 26 July to 16 August in Morocco.
South Africa must trim its provisional squad of 31 players to a final group of 26 before departing for the tournament.
"It was a long process to get the 31 together," Ellis said.
"It was not easy because there are so many players putting their hands up, but we have to be happy with the players we have selected.
"We have a very good mix of youth and experience. Many of the players have performed exceptionally well in the league, but unfortunately, we can only choose a certain number. Selecting the final 26 is even more difficult.
"As a coach, those are the decisions you have to make. We have to ensure we have the right balance of youth and experience in every position because this tournament requires players who can adapt."
The defending African champions have been drawn in Group B alongside Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Tanzania, with their campaign set to begin against Tanzania.
Ellis highlighted the importance of selecting versatile players capable of filling multiple roles when injuries or tactical adjustments become necessary.
Captain Refiloe Jane was singled out as one of the squad's most adaptable players.
"Refiloe Jane has played almost every position for the national team except goalkeeper," Ellis said.
"When injuries happen, we want to make sure every position is covered. If we need to change the game or chase a result, we need players who can step in. Those are all the scenarios we consider when selecting the final 26."
