Benni McCarthy’s Kenya came back strongly in the second half to hold Estonia to a 1-1 draw in their Fifa series clash at Kigali in Rwanda on Friday.
It was the first match for the Harambee Stars since a 8-0 thrashing in a friendly at the hands of Senegal last November and they bounced back for a deserved draw against European opposition.
McCarthy’s record as coach now stands at six wins, five draws and five defeats in 16 matches since he took over as Kenya coach one year ago.
Estonia caught Kenya napping with the opening goal in the 21st minute as Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno came out but could not get a hand to the ball and allowed Estonia defender Tanel Tammik to head home on his debut.
Kenya’s equaliser came seven minutes into the second half, scored by Austrian-based striker Ryan Ogam.
Kenya had several chances to secure a victory near the end but their finishing was poor.
A penalty shootout was held after the 90 minutes to decide who will play the winner of Friday’s later clash between hosts Rwanda and Grenada in the four-nation tournament final on Tuesday.
