Shafali Verma was initially dropped from India's Women's World Cup squad but the opener returned as an injury replacement to star in the title win and etch her name in history.

The 21-year-old batter scored an attacking 87 and took two crucial wickets with her part-time off-spin against South Africa in Sunday's final in Mumbai.

She was named player of the match for her all-round blitz as India won their maiden Women's World Cup title at a packed DY Patil Stadium.

Verma has given India many blazing starts since her international debut aged just 16 but fell out of favour with the selectors in the 50-over format because of patchy form.

However, fate had different plans and an injury to in-form opener Pratika Rawal in the last league match forced India to replace her with Verma.

Verma made just 10 in India's stunning victory over holders Australia in the semifinals but rose to the occasion in the title clash with her career-best ODI score.

"I said at the start that God has sent me here to do something nice, and that reflected today," Verma said.

"It was difficult but I had confidence in myself – that if I can stay calm, I could achieve everything."

On a day when Verma could do no wrong, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur handed her the ball in the 20th over and she delivered immediately with the wicket of Sune Luus, caught and bowled for 25.

She then got Marizanne Kapp caught behind on a ball sliding down the leg side in her next over.

"We had spoken to her that if needed she will bowl one or two overs and in reply she said, 'I am ready to bowl 10 overs'," Kaur revealed.

"That showed her confidence in bowling. I gave her the bowl at a crucial time and the back-to-back breakthroughs was the turning point for us."

NEXT SUPERSTAR 

It has been a roller-coaster ride for Verma, who is from the conservative northern state of Haryana.

As a nine-year-old she played in a boys' tournament after cutting her hair short so she could get a game.

"I told my father that I will go and play disguised as my brother (who was sick) and even had his name on my back," Verma told AFP in 2020.

"I played and became man of the match and series."

She also described how her father Sanjeev was cheated out of all the family's money by an imposter who promised him a job.

Fast forward to the present, and her ODI average was modest at 22.55 before Sunday's heroics when she surpassed her previous 50-over best score of 71 not out.

The 49-ball 50 was Verma's first in three years, but at 21 years and 278 days she was the youngest to hit a half-century in a Women's ODI World Cup final.

In 2019, Verma was picked for the Velocity team in the women's T20 Challenge – a precursor to the Women's Premier League – and walked onto the field with Indian cricket great Mithali Raj.

She shared the dressing room with international stars including England's World Cup-winning allrounder Danielle Wyatt, who called her the next "superstar" of Indian cricket.

India celebrated a watershed moment in its sporting history on Monday after the women's cricket team won their first World Cup crown, with greats of the game saying it would inspire future generations.

A packed DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai saw hosts India defeat South Africa by 52 runs on Sunday, adding a women's trophy to the country's four men's World Cup titles, starting with the first in 1983.

"1983 inspired an entire generation to dream big and chase those dreams. Today, our women's cricket team has done something truly special," batting legend Sachin Tendulkar posted on social media.

"They have inspired countless young girls across the country to pick up a bat and ball, take the field and believe that they too can lift that trophy one day."

"This is a defining moment in the journey of Indian women's cricket," he added.

Fans celebrated at home and on the streets, with crowds in the capital Delhi waving Indian flags and setting off fireworks.

Virat Kohli, the star batsman from the men's team, described the triumph as "an inspiration for generations to come".

"You've made every Indian proud with your fearless cricket and belief throughout," Kohli wrote on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the "historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports".

India posted 298-7, with Shafali Verma smashing a quickfire 87 and Deepti Sharma making a run-a-ball 58.

South Africa's chase was led by captain Laura Wolvaardt's fighting 101 but regular wickets, including Sharma's match-winning 5-39, saw them dismissed for 246 off 45.3 overs.

A few members of the team which played in India's first Women's World Cup appearance in 1978, including captain Diana Edulji, were in attendance when India lifted the trophy shortly after midnight to deafening cheers from a 45 000 crowd.

The scenes of jubilation contrasted sharply with 2005, when India's runners-up position merited only a small mention in newspapers.

"It's just that there were ups and downs, but the team had self-belief," India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur told reporters after the win.

"I've been saying this since day one. We weren't looking to the left or right. We were only looking at our main end goal."

India reached the final after bouncing back from three defeats in a row in the league stage.

Kaur now joins the ranks of World Cup-winning India captains such as Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

In a gripping final against hosts India, the Proteas displayed courage throughout, marking a historic milestone as South Africa’s first-ever appearance in a World Cup final.

The Proteas Women’s journey to the final captured the hearts of millions back home. Throughout the tournament, the Proteas Women rewrote the record books. Their commanding semifinal victory against England saw them post a record-breaking total of 319/7, their highest ever score in a Women’s World Cup match.

Laura Wolvaardt delivered a standout World Cup campaign. She led from the front with an extraordinary 169, setting a new benchmark for the highest individual score by a captain in a World Cup knockout fixture. Wolvaardt finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 571 runs, and her performances, combined with exemplary leadership, were pivotal to the team’s success throughout the tournament.

Marizanne Kapp also continued to etch her name into cricketing history, becoming the leading wicket-taker in ICC Women’s World Cup history with 44 wickets.

CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki, who was in attendance at the Dr Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, shared his immense pride in the team’s performance and their historic journey to the final.

A heroic century from Proteas women captain Laura Wolvaardt was not enough to save her team, as they fell to a 52-run defeat against India in the final of the 50-over World Cup at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Wolvaardt cracked 11 fours and a six in a sublime 101 off 98 balls, her second straight century after her player of the match 169 in their semifinal win over England, but she unfortunately didn’t receive enough support from the rest of the batting order.

Youngster Annerie Dercksen, 35 off 37 balls (1x4; 2x6) was the next best batter, showing how little support Wolvaardt received from the rest of the order, in particular the senior players who came up short.

For India it was star all-round performances from Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma that secured them a famous win in front of their home fans.

Verma top scored for her team with 87 off 78 balls (7x4; 2x6) at the top of the order, while Sharma struck a run-a-ball 58 (3x4; 1x6) down the back end to get them to a solid 298/7 batting first.

Sharma then spun a web in the chase, picking up a brilliant 5/39 in 9.3 overs, while Verma, who is only a part time bowler, claimed 2/36 in seven, with the Proteas eventually all out for 246.

“I think I couldn’t be prouder of this team for the campaign we have had. We played some brilliant cricket throughout, but we were outplayed today. I think India played fantastically well,” said Wolvaardt during the presentation.

“Unfortunate for us to be on the losing side but I am sure we will definitely grow from this as a group.

“We did so well to put a few bad games (in the pool stage) behind us. We were either really good or really bad, but thankfully there was a lot more really good (moments) throughout this tournament.

“With so many different players stepping up it was an amazing tournament for a lot of different players and I am just proud of the resilience shown to get all the way to the final.”

The Proteas chase got off to a steady start with a 51-run stand in under 10 overs between Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits (23).

But with things looking good Brits then ran herself out, trying to sneak a quick single off Renuka Thakur, and was soon followed back by the woefully out of form Anneke Bosch for a sixth ball duck, trapped LBW by Shree Charani, as they slipped to 62/2 in the 12th over.

Sune Luus (25) was next in and along with Wolvaardt they settled things down with a 52-run third wicket stand, to get their side past the 100-run mark.

But again, just as the Proteas were seemingly getting back on top, India struck, this time through inspired captaincy, as Harmanpreet Kaur brought part timer Verma on to bowl, and she repaid that faith in style.

First Luus popped an easy catch straight back to the bowler, and in her next over she got the prized wicket of Marizanne Kapp (4), feathering an edge to keeper Richa Ghosh as they Proteas stumbled to 123/4.

Wolvaardt desperately needed a partner, but unfortunately couldn’t find it in Sinalo Jafta (16), as she struggled immensely before she hit Sharma straight to Radha Yadav at short midwicket, leaving them in trouble on 148/5.

Dercksen then arrived at the crease, and with Wolvaardt they reignited the Proteas hopes with a 61-run sixth wicket partnership, taking them past the 200-run mark.

But Sharma stepped up when her team needed it the most, getting the breakthrough by bowling Dercksen in the 40th over, and then in the 42nd had Wolvaardt caught at deep midwicket by Amanjot Kaur, and pinned Chloe Tryon (9) LBW, which effectively ended their challenge with them 221/8.

Nadine de Klerk (18), who had been the Proteas star finisher in the tournament had too much to do with the tail and was eventually last out, caught by Harmanpreet off Sharma to end proceedings.

At the start of play the Proteas won the toss and chose to bowl, and battled back well as they were set a tricky target of 299, despite India getting off to a great start.

A target between 320 and 350 definitely seemed to be on the cards after a strong start from the hosts, but good bowling at the death, which saw the last 10 overs go for just 69 runs, meant they chased a much more manageable target.

Proteas pace bowler Ayabonga Khaka was the pick of the lot, claiming 3/58 in her nine overs, while spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba backed her up with 1/47 in 10.

The Indian innings got off to a great start as Smriti Mandhana (45) and Verma shared in a 104-run opening stand in under 18 overs to get them up and running.

They targeted the opening bowling pair of Kapp and Khaka, going at over seven runs an over at the start, which saw the 50 come up after just 6.3 overs, but some tight bowling from first change bowlers Mlaba and De Klerk slowed the hosts down nicely.

An action packed 18th over, the first from Tryon, then saw the India cross the 100-run mark with a boundary, before Mandhana feathered an edge to keeper Jafta to be first to fall, and Verma then brought up her half century with a single.

The Proteas should have had a second wicket soon after in the 21st over, when Verma, on 56, skied Luus to Bosch at midwicket, only for her to drop a relatively simple chance.

That allowed Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues (24), to combine for a 62-run second wicket stand, to keep their side ticking along nicely.

Khaka, who struggled in her first spell going for 29 off three overs, then returned for her second and came back superbly, as she first got the big breakthrough in the 28th over, having Verma caught by Luus at mid off with the score 166/2.

She struck again in the 30th, as Rodrigues was brilliantly caught by captain Laura Wolvaardt at extra cover, taking a superb low take just off the surface as India slipped to 171/3.

The brought Sharma in to join her captain Harmanpreet (20), and they added 52 to the total, taking their side past 200, before Harmanpreet was bowled by a straight delivery from Mlaba, leaving them on 223/4 in the 39th over.

Amanjot (12) didn’t last long, before popping a return catch to De Klerk at the start of the 44th, which made it 245/5, bringing big hitting Ghosh, 34 off 24 (3x4; 2x6), to the crease.

Ghosh proceeded to dominate a 47-run partnership with Sharma, who reached her half century along the way, but fell in the penultimate over, caught by Dercksen at deep backward square leg off Khaka, while Sharma was run out off the last ball of the innings.

India produced a masterclass in how to pace a chase to send defending campions, Australia, crashing out.

The hosts have been in a final twice before – in 2005 and 2017 – but fell short on both occasions.

But she is the only South African in the top ten. India have three players in those ranks-Smriti Mandhana (second), Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur - each adding depth to the hosts’ batting blueprint.

While Wolvaardt has carried the bulk of the batting load, Nadine de Klerk has quietly become South Africa’s silent assassin.

De Klerk’s ability to accelerate late in the innings and absorb pressure has been pivotal in turning stumbles into surges.

BOWLED OVER: KAPP AN CO TO THE RESCUE

But it’s the bowlers that have been the architects of success for South Africa.

When the batting has failed, they’ve stepped up. Chief among the destroyers has been Marizanne Kapp.

A ferocious competitor and veteran of the women’s game, her 12 wickets at 15.33, including a five-for against England, has been instrumental.

Nonkululeko Mlaba’s left-arm spin has added bite, claiming 12 wickets at 20.66, while Chloe Tryon’s underrated spells have chipped in with key breakthroughs.

Not to forget another veteran, Masabata Klaas, who has been critical in stifling the scoring when the bowlers haven't had much to play with.

Hosts India face South Africa in the final in Mumbai on Sunday, with both teams hoping to win the women's one-day showpiece for the first time in its 52-year history.

India have been runners-up twice, in 2005 and 2017, and reached their third final after beating seven-time champions Australia in a thriller.

"Last time when we reached the final and came back to India, we saw a big change," Kaur told reporters.

"Women's cricket moved ahead and we saw many girls on the ground. So I am sure that if we win this final, we will see many more changes and we will see more cricket, not only on the international level but also on the domestic level."

"So I think we are really looking forward to that moment when we will see women's cricket in a more serious manner and we will see more girls (playing)," she said.

Indian players like Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have become household names in the world's most populous nation since the Women's Premier League T20 tournament began in 2023.

Jemimah Rodrigues played a champion's knock with an unbeaten 127 to help India chase down a record 339 against Australia in Thursday's semifinal.

"I think it's a proud moment for me and the entire team," Kaur said.

"I am sure the entire country must be also very proud of the way we have played the last two games and, yeah, it's a big day."

South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, beat four-time winners England to reach their first ODI World Cup final.

Wolvaardt said the pressure on the home team could work in South Africa's favour.

"I think with the whole crowd behind India, probably a sold-out stadium, it's going to be a very exciting opportunity," Wolvaardt said.

"But at the same time, I think it puts a lot of pressure on them as well. So yeah, I think it sort of plays in our favour, hopefully."

Kaur said a new winner will be good for the sport.

"Because of that we are seeing more excitement," she said. "And for us to reach the final is also very special, not only for us but for the Indian fans who have been a big support for us."

It is a regular net session at a cricket academy in New Delhi, but the joy among the colourful jersey-clad young girls is unmistakable.

They have a shimmering new source of inspiration, after the Indian women's team pulled off a stunning victory against favourites Australia in the women's World Cup semifinal on Thursday.

Batter Jemimah Rodrigues slammed an unbeaten 127 as India chased down a record 339 at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium to secure a place in Sunday's final against South Africa.

"There is always that one thing that inspires a generation," said 19-year-old Armeet Kaur, a batting allrounder who has played for the Delhi state team.

"Jemmy's innings yesterday was like that. It will really change things."

Twelve-year-old Ridhima Chaudhary was star-struck.

"It made me feel like I have to play like them," she said.

The sixth-grade student said she has already been working towards that goal – training three hours a day, five days a week.

"My parents also say that cricket academy is as important as school," she added.

Coach Sumit Poria called the victory a "turning point" for the sport in India.

"The way the crowd cheered for the team – it's a shot in the arm like nothing else before," he said.

While the overall infrastructure has improved in recent years, a big victory like the one on Thursday "will go a long way in convincing parents" to let young women pursue cricket seriously, Poria added.

PRIZE PURSE EXCEEDS MEN'S 

The eight-nation tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, has already broken records.

Data released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and streaming platform JioHotstar showed the first 13 matches drew more than 60 million viewers – five times higher than the 2022 edition.

The India–Pakistan clash earlier this month became the most-watched women's international match ever, with 28.4 million viewers.

That's still a small figure for the world's most populous nation, but it shows the rise in popularity of women's cricket.

India, twice runners-up, are chasing a maiden title in the 50-over World Cup that now boasts a record $13.88 million prize purse – eclipsing even the men's total from two years ago.

In New Delhi, the excitement is tangible. Replica women's team jerseys sold out online just hours after India secured their final berth.

The popularity is being matched by economic clout.

The wider sports market is booming in India, with its estimated value to surge to $130 billion by 2030, according to a 2024 report by Deloitte and Google.

The 2023 launch of the Women's Premier League generated about $700 million in franchise and media rights for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The move toward pay parity, pushed by then-BCCI secretary and now ICC chairman Jay Shah, has further boosted the women's game.

'VERY BIG MOMENT' 

"The rise of digital platforms has transformed sports consumption... occurring alongside a growing diversification of India's sports fans," the Deloitte report said.

And women are a key part of that.

"Women's sports are on the rise," it said. "Fans are increasingly interested in women's sports."

Whether or not India lift the trophy on Sunday, the young cricketers at Delhi's training nets say the impact is already beyond measure.

"When I started playing six years ago, there were only the men to get inspired by," said 18-year-old Ishita Singh. "But now there's the women's team too."

Veteran Indian sports journalist Sharda Ugra called the win "a very big moment".

"It will make the game leapfrog another level in India in terms of attention and being a viable career option for so many girls who want to take part in sport," she said.

"Already there is a mass of talent burgeoning in women's cricket in India. This will make that five times bigger, whatever happens in the final."

India's women cricketing stars, including Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, have become household names, attracting major sponsorships and wide media coverage.

There is a big market to tap into.

"Women now comprise 236 million fans – or 36 precent – of the fanbase," the study estimated.

"This debunks the notion of a male-only fanbase – and (shows) women's fast-growing influence in sports."

India's newest cricket star, Jemimah Rodrigues, overcame anxiety and tears to lead her country into the women's World Cup final with a sublime century against Australia.

The 25-year-old batter scored 127 not out as India chased down a record 339 at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium, securing a place in Sunday's final against South Africa.

India have been to the one-day final twice before but have never won it.

Rodrigues, who was dropped for the World Cup in 2022, said she has struggled mentally throughout the tournament.

She was not an automatic choice for this edition and was even dropped from the league game against England after a string of modest scores.

"I have almost cried every day through this tour," Rodrigues said after the semifinal victory on Thursday in her home city, breaking down.

"Not doing well mentally, going through anxiety. I knew I had to show up and God took care of everything," said the batter, after her third ODI century.

A devout Christian born in Mumbai, Rodrigues said she was told just five minutes before the match to bat at No 3.

She responded with what she called her "best knock ever", forging a 167-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who made 89.

Harmanpreet fell in the 36th over but Rodrigues stood firm in humid conditions, pausing in between and even talking to herself during the 134-ball marathon.

"I was praying, I was talking to God because I feel I have a personal relationship with him and when I cannot carry myself, he always carries me," Rodrigues said.

"I knew how important this match was and I wanted to be there to finish it off."

She sank to her knees in tears after Amanjot Kaur hit the winning boundary and later embraced her emotional parents on the sidelines.

'MENTAL RESILIENCE'

Rodrigues has been a dependable – if not spectacular – presence for India since her white-ball debut in 2018, scoring 1 725 ODI runs at an average of over 35, mostly as a middle-order batter.

Harmanpreet praised her teammate's composure in the heat of battle.

"Jemimah is someone who always wants to do really well for the team," said Harmanpreet.

"She is very calculative and wants to take responsibility. We always trust her and today was a very special knock."

Former Indian men's captain Sunil Gavaskar said Rodrigues's experience in overseas leagues had helped her develop a mature approach to batting.

"She has got some experience," Gavaskar told the India Today channel. "She knows how to pace an innings. She has the ability."

Australia, unbeaten until the semifinal and strong favourites to retain their crown, were left reeling by Rodrigues's masterclass.

Their captain Alyssa Healy said the seven-time champions "let ourselves down" and were "un-Australian" in not being as clinical as they would normally be.

But she reserved special praise for the hero of the hour, Rodrigues.

"Her resilience – her mental resilience – out there to get her team over the line was exemplary, so full credit to her," she said.

Batter Rodrigues hit an unbeaten 127 as the hosts chased down a record 339 in Mumbai on Thursday to oust reigning seven-time champions Australia in Mumbai.

Amanjot Kaur hit the winning boundary to take India into their third final of an ODI World Cup, triggering emotional scenes.

The 25-year-old Rodrigues sank to her knees in tears while her teammates rushed to celebrate the sensational upset.

"This is the greatest day in the history of Indian women's cricket," veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle said on X.

Virat Kohli, the star batsman from the men's team, called Rodrigues' display the "standout performance".

"A true display of resilience, belief and passion," he said on social media.

Former men's captain Sunil Gavaskar called the victory "exhilarating" and "absolutely thrilling", especially because they were clear underdogs.

"They'd lost to three big guns in the tournament and then to come back the way they have just tells you the determination of this team," the batting great said on TV channel India Today.

"So clearly you can say that the Indian women's team has definitely come of age."

India lost three successive matches in the league phase before clinching the last semifinal spot, in contrast to Australia's unbeaten run into the final four.

India were in trouble at 59-2 in reply to Australia's massive 338 when Rodrigues turned the game on its head in a 167-run third-wicket partnership with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who hit 89.

Rodrigues, a middle-order batter who had a modest start in the tournament and was dropped in the league game against England, was promoted to No 3 and delivered when it mattered.

"When you are left and then come back into the team the pressure is way too high... today's innings was a marvellous innings," said Gavaskar.

That was echoed by former national cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who called it an "innings of a lifetime".

"Fantastic to watch free-flowing cricket by Jemimah Rodrigues," he said on X.

"In and out from the team but she never stopped believing."

India have twice been runners-up, in 2005 and 2017.

In 2017 they beat Australia in the semifinals before losing to England.

Stunned captain Alyssa Healy says Australia let themselves down after their reign as one-day world champions was brought to a shuddering halt by hosts India.

The world's most dominant side put together an imposing 338 in their semifinal in Mumbai on Thursday, with the odds heavily in favour of them winning.

But fielding mistakes coupled with Jemimah Rodrigues's glorious unbeaten 127 saw India pull off a record chase to set up a final against South Africa.

"Just disappointed," said Healy.

"Ultimately we just weren't sharp enough in all three facets to give ourselves the opportunity to win that semifinal.

"Not taking anything away from the Indian performance, (but) there's an element of we let ourselves down."

It was seven-time champions Australia's first loss in the ODI World Cup since 2017, when India beat them in the semifinal.

The defeat also revived bitter memories of being knocked out at the same stage of the Twenty20 World Cup last year as three-time defending champions.

Wicketkeeper Healy, playing at her last ODI World Cup, admitted they failed to capitalise on their opportunities, with a key moment coming when she dropped Rodrigues on 82.

Tahlia McGrath then repeated the blunder on 106.

"It feels a little bit un-Australian to not be as clinical as we normally are, and knowing how well we played at this World Cup," said Healy.

"I think we're playing some unbelievable cricket, and that's why it doesn't quite feel right sitting here at the losing end, not getting to Sunday's fixture.

"I simply say that because of the different contributions that we've had right throughout, it wasn't just one person making all the runs and taking all the wickets.

"I think the team contributed equally right throughout, which put us in a really nice place heading into this final series."

Despite the devastating loss that left a team that has long dominated women's cricket without a world title, allrounder Ellyse Perry said she did not expect a major overhaul of the side.

"Some days you just don't quite play well enough... but at the end of the day, I think hopefully there's a lot of joy in our cricket," she told cricket.com.au.

"People enjoy watching us play and there's more opportunity ahead."

The pair rotated strike, picked gaps, and accelerated with precision, putting Australia under sustained pressure.

“Today was not about my hundred - it was about making India win,” Rodrigues said after being named Player of the Match.

She spoke candidly about her personal struggles over the past year, including being dropped from the squad and battling anxiety. “I just stood still, and God fought for me.”

Once Harmanpreet departed, Rodrigues continued to marshal the chase, finding support from Richa Ghosh, whose 26 off 16 balls included two sixes and two boundaries.

“We’ve crossed the line we’ve been chasing for years,” said Harmanpreet. “One more game to go.”

Australia, meanwhile, were left to reflect on missed chances and a late collapse.

Their fielding faltered under pressure, with dropped catches and misfields compounding the challenge of defending a total in dewy conditions.

Captain Alyssa Healy acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and hinted at generational change ahead of the next World Cup cycle.

Reflecting on her mammoth effort, Wolvaardt said: “We identified early that it was a decent wicket, so wanted to keep going.

“I wanted to go until the 40th over and then, while I was there, thought I might as well try to whack a few.”

CLASSY KAPP ON FIRE

Kapp made a dream start with the ball, bowling England opener Amy Jones through the gate with just the second delivery of the innings as they floundered in their pursuit of 320.

It went from dream to perfection when she repeated the dose, as former captain Heather Knight played on to leave the English in disarray at 0-2.

But Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey did rebuild, helped by the wound-up Kapp leaving the field with a bout of cramp.

And the pair were given two lives in one ball with the score on 63 when Nondumiso Shangase - on for Kapp - dropped Capsey’s heave down the ground on the long-on boundary, only for her return throw to come within an inch of running out Sciver-Brunt as Sune Luus whipped off the bails.

The 100 partnership came up and both reached half-centuries to give England a foothold, only for Capsey to cloth Luus straight to Nadine de Klerk at mid-off to leave them 108-4.

Kapp’s return looked to be a huge moment in the game. And so it proved, as the 35-year-old nibbled one away from the dangerous Sciver-Brunt, who edged behind to end her 76-ball stay on a score of 64.

Then went Sophia Dunkley in almost identical fashion before Charlie Dean feathered through to Jafta with her feet in concrete, giving the fired-up Kapp her fifth scalp and a hat-trick ball opportunity.

Sophie Ecclestone resisted it, having earlier returned her nation’s best bowling figures of 4-44, but fell slog-sweeping Nonkululeko Mlaba into the hands of Annerie Dercksen.

Veteran Danni Wyatt-Hodge (34) hoisted De Klerk straight down the throat of substitute fielder Tumi Sekhukhune at deep backward square leg to leave South Africa on the brink.

SA CAPTAIN GOES BIG

Earlier Wolvaardt had dazzled with her game-changing century, almost batting through the innings in reaching 169 as her side recorded the second-highest score in Women’s World Cup matches.

Driving repeatedly through the covers early on, the captain changed tack in the death overs with a flurry of legside boundaries including four sixes.

A thin edge through to fine leg for four was hardly the typical Wolvaardt style for such a feat, but that's merely a footnote in the career of a textbook and she more than made up for it.

A thin edge through to fine leg for four was hardly the typical Wolvaardt style for such a feat, but that's merely a footnote in the career of a textbook player.

Fastidious with the bat and unflinchingly unfussed and with a cover drive that would make Kumar Sangakkarra blush, the South African captain has been breaking records since her teenage years.

Still only 26 years old, Wolvaardt is the second fastest to the feat and sixth highest run-scorer of all time in the women’s one-day format and the only South African woman to make it past the 4 000-run mark.

She tends to shrug off the plaudits, believing it is her duty rather than a chore, her feats make it hard not to take note. Just four months after making her international debut, she became the youngest South African - male all female and in all formats - to score a century. That record still remains and there will be more to come.

Testament to her tenacity is that she has been unburnt by captaincy. Rather than suffer, her batting has excelled and in 2023, she scored three unbeaten centuries in 12 matches, including her career best of 184 against Sri Lanka.

Whenever the team has had their back against the wall, it has been Wolvaardt who has led from the front and South Africans will be hoping she does so for many years to come.

South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt on Tuesday said the "calmest team" will emerge on top in their semifinal clash with England at the Women's World Cup.

The Proteas won five of seven matches in the league phase to take third spot below England in the standings, and the two face each other again in Guwahati on Wednesday.

"I think for me tomorrow it will be just about keeping everyone as calm as possible," Wolvaardt told reporters on the eve of the first semifinal.

"I think the calmest team out there will most likely win. I think 50 overs is a very long time and it is very easy to let the pressure of a semifinal get to you."

South Africa are chasing their first World Cup title, having fallen short in the latter stages of previous tournaments.

They were beaten by England in the semifinals of the last two ODI World Cups in 2017 and 2022, and although they reached the final of the last two T20 World Cups (2023 and 2024), the trophy still eludes them.

"That semifinal loss against England was four years ago so I think we were a totally different looking side, they have got a lot of different players as well," Wolvaardt said of their defeat in 2022.

"It's sort of a fresh opportunity and it starts from zero, so I am looking forward to the challenge and hopefully I am able to learn from those (T20) semifinal victories that we have got and stay calmer under pressure."

Led by Nat Sciver-Brunt, England's only defeat so far at this edition of the tournament was to Ashes rivals Australia.

They are favourites against a South Africa team that was bundled out for 97 by Australia in their last game. That heavy defeat ended a run of five straight wins for South Africa, who suffered a 10-wicket thrashing by England in their tournament opener.

"I am proud of this group, the way they have stuck together," England coach Charlotte Edwards said. "We have sort of five weeks away now and our best cricket is yet to come and that's a really exciting place for us as a group."

Defending champions Australia will face hosts India in the second semifinal on Thursday in the outskirts of Mumbai. The final is on Sunday.

“We've had a great tournament so far. As a group, we're trying to focus on the positives, sticking to our game plans, and doing what we do best. If we just keep playing the way that we have, we'll have a really good shot at winning tomorrow.

“We want to win tomorrow, and so do they. It's a semifinal, anything can happen, so if we just play our best cricket, it'll be a really good game,” the skipper noted.

Encounters between South Africa and England have become a familiar fixture in ICC tournaments, with the two sides meeting at the semifinal stage of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups in 2017 and 2022, as well as in the historic 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semifinal at Newlands, where the Proteas triumphed to become the first senior South African team to reach a World Cup final.

In the current 50-over campaign, South Africa began their tournament with a heavy 10-wicket defeat to England at the same venue. They then bounced back in outstanding fashion, securing five consecutive victories against New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, before losing to defending champions Australia in a top-of-the-table contest.

Reflecting on the team’s recent experiences in World Cup knockout matches, including back-to-back semifinal wins in the shorter format in 2023 and 2024, Wolvaardt expressed her hope that those moments will help the Proteas Women maintain composure under pressure.

“We've had some success in ICC tournaments. Obviously, a totally different format, but that semifinal loss against England was four years ago.

As the Proteas Women prepare for their highly anticipated ICC Women’s World Cup semifinal match against England tomorrow, (29 October), Proteas men's captain Temba Bavuma has thrown his full support behind the team, urging them to focus on legacy and execution.

The game, which takes place at the Barsapara Stadium at 11:30am (SAST), will be shown live on SuperSport, on Channel SS Cricket and SS GrandStand.

Should the Proteas defeat England tomorrow, they will secure a place in the ICC Women’s World Cup Final, something the team has never managed to do before.

Bavuma says going all the way and winning the World Cup will represent a momentous occasion for South African sport.

“I think it would add so much to South Africa’s story, both from a cricketing and sporting point of view,” said Bavuma .

“As a country, we’ve really been doing well, and seeing the women reach that point would only strengthen our legacy.”

“It would show again that we are truly champions of the world. There’s no pressure on the ladies, we’ll be right behind them, supporting them all the way. We just want them to be part of history.”

The Protea Women have navigated a rollercoaster campaign to reach the knockout stages, often displaying sublime form with bat and ball.

However, their journey was punctuated by two crushing defeats, the first of which came at the hands of their semifinal opponents, England, in the tournament’s opening game.

Adding historical weight to the encounter, England have also been responsible for eliminating the Proteas Women from a previous World Cup.

Despite the challenging moments, Bavuma remains confident in the squad's performance and spirit.

“I’m super proud. I think the ladies have had a really good run to get to this stage of the tournament—the knockout stages,” he said.

“Now it’s the business end of the campaign, where everything counts. I’m sure they’ll go into the game with a lot of confidence.”

“Yes, they had a tough encounter with England earlier on, but that means nothing when it comes to the playoffs.”

“We’ll be supporting them all the way, Laura Wolvaardt and the rest of the team. Hopefully, they’ll be able to perform close to their best come Wednesday.”

Drawing on his own experience leading the men's national team through high-pressure situations, Bavuma offered crucial advice on maintaining focus and consistency for the historic semifinal.

“I think in a World Cup campaign, you’re never going to be at your best all the time—there’s almost a science to losing, and sometimes that makes sense,” the captain explained.

“From a captain’s point of view, the key is motivating the players to perform as close to their best as possible.”

“By now, everyone knows their role within the team, and it’s about executing that to the best of their ability, regardless of the opponent or the occasion.”

He stressed the importance of trusting their established processes.

“Nothing really changes from that perspective; you don’t want to start doing things differently.”

“I know there’ll be a lot of us supporting the ladies and sending messages, but it’s also important that the team stays focused and keeps things controlled internally. The ladies just need to continue doing what they’ve been doing.”

Bavuma singled out opener Laura Wolvaardt for her inspiring performances throughout the tournament.

“Laura Wolvaardt has been incredible. She’s winning games and giving us memories of Marizanne Kapp from when we were growing up,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for her, and she’s handled it really well at the top.”

“It always helps when the captain is leading from the front. There are also other players who’ve stepped up and made big contributions.”

Rain once again played spoilsport in the Women's Cricket World Cup as the final league match between India and Bangladesh was abandoned at Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Co-hosts India got some match practise ahead of their semifinal against holders Australia but heavy downpour in the western Indian city left them with a no result.

Chasing a revised target of 126 in 27 overs, India were 57-0 in 8.4 overs with Smriti Mandhana (34) and Amanjot Kaur (15) unbeaten when rain had the final say at the DY Patil Stadium.

It was the sixth match of the 50-over women's marquee event to be abandoned due to rain, including five washouts in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.

Kaur opened the innings for India after regular opener Pratika Rawal limped off the field when she twisted her ankle while fielding.

Indian bowlers led by left-arm spinner Radha Yadav and her 3-30 restricted Bangladesh to 119-9 in 27 overs.

India opted to field first after rain reduced the match to 43-overs-a-side but after play resumed Bangladesh reached 39-2 in 12.2 overs when a heavy shower again interrupted play.

After two hours and 14 minutes, play resumed with overs cut down further and Bangladesh kept losing wickets after skipper Nigar Sultana was run-out by a direct throw from Radha at backward point.

Sharmin Akhter (36) and Sobhana Mostary, who smashed 26 off 21 balls, attempted to hit back but Radha broke through to dismiss Mostary and took a wicket in each of her next two overs.

Fellow left-arm orthodox Shree Charani took two wickets and combined with Radha to make Bangladesh finish on a below-par total.

England will face South Africa in the first semifinal on Wednesday in Guwahati.

India, chasing their first World Cup title, and seven-time champions Australia will clash in Navi Mumbai on Thursday ahead of the final at the same venue on November 2.

An emotional Sophie Devine was given a guard of honour as the New Zealand captain played her last one-day international in Sunday's eight-wicket loss to England at the Women's World Cup, ending an ODI career spanning 19 years and 159 matches.

Allrounder Devine, 36, made her debut in October 2006 and is one of three women to complete the double of scoring 4 000 runs and taking 100 wickets in the 50-over format, along with Stafanie Taylor and Ellyse Perry.

Devine, who also represented New Zealand in field hockey before focusing on cricket, led the country to victory in last year's Twenty20 World Cup. She will continue to play in the 20-over format.

"It was about enjoying it today and going back to the roots of 19 years ago and why I play," said Devine, who scored 23 runs and dismissed Heather Knight as New Zealand ended their World Cup campaign in the group stage.

Devine scored nine centuries and 18 fifties, amassing 4 279 runs and 111 wickets in the format. The white-ball specialist, known for her heavy hitting, became the first woman to hit nine sixes in an ODI innings when she scored 93 runs against Pakistan in just 41 balls in 2017.

She also jointly holds the record for scoring the fastest fifty in women's T20 internationals with Australia's Phoebe Litchfield, both having completed half-centuries in just 18 balls.

"Enjoy it while it lasts but realise cricket is just a game. Not fully done just yet so sure I'll be annoying people around the grounds," Devine added.
