Sophie Devine scored an outstanding half-century and held her nerve to close out the game with a brilliant display of death-bowling to help the Gujarat Giants Women secure a thrilling four-run over the Delhi Capitals Women in their Women’s Premier League (WPL) match at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday.

Jemimah Rodrigues, the Capitals captain, won the toss and opted to bowl first. She watched as Devine put on a masterclass with the bat as she led Gujarat to 209 in 20 overs. Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt put up a strong fight in the Capitals’ chase, but only helped the Capitals to 205/5.
Devine put on a display of brutal hitting on her way to a 42-ball 95 (7X4, 8X6). This is her third WPL half-century, and she faced 25 balls to reach the milestone. Devine was particularly severe on Sneh Rama, against whom she struck 32 runs in a single over in a spectacular take down that featured two fours and four consecutive sixes.
“She (Devine) put us under pressure but the way Nandani and Charani bowled...could not be more proud. Tough pill to swallow but lots of positives to take. Tough to bowl when Devine is in such form,” Rodrigues shared after the match.
Devine fell while trying to flick a Nandani Sharma delivery to the leg side, instead, she scooped the ball to the fine leg region, where Shree Charani took a diving catch. Charani kept up the Capitals’ momentum with Georgia Wareham’s wicket three balls later. However, Gujarat recovered from the wobble thanks to Ashleigh Gardner’s batting.
Gardner, with whom Devine shared a 32-run second-wicket partnership, took over the reins after Devine’s dismissal. The Australian allrounder kept Gujarat in control with a well-played 49 from 26 balls. Devine and Gardner’s contributions nullified top performances from the Capitals’ trio of Nandani Sharma, Lizelle Lee, and Laura Wolvaardt.
Gujarat could have scored more than 209 runs had it not been for Nandani. Despite conceding 10 runs in the 20th over, the pacer took four wickets against a rampant Gujarat batting line-up. Three of the wickets were a hat-trick, which made her the fourth bowler to claim a hat-trick. She finished the match with five wickets for 33 runs in four overs.
Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt commandeered the chase for the Capitals with a pair of half-centuries. Lee led the charge with a wonderful 54-ball 84 (12X4, 3X6). This is her maiden WPL half-century and she faced 33 balls to reach the milestone. Lee cobbled an outstanding 90-run second-wicket partnership with Laura Wolvaardt.
Wolvaardt played the anchor role while Lee went after the Capitals’ bowling attack and then took centre stage after Lee’s dismissal in the 15th over. Wolvaardt stepped on the gas as the raced to her fourth WPL half-century in 29 balls. The South African star was dismissed for a wonderful 38-ball 77. Her innings came to an end in the 20th over while she was trying to play a winning shot.
Wolvaardt was denied glory by Devine, who successfully defended seven runs in the final over. The Australian star conceded only two runs and bagged two wickets, dismissing Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues. She finished the match with two wickets for 21 runs in three overs and was Gujarat’s best bowler.
