Rajat Patidar scored 53 from 20 deliveries to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru to an emphatic Indian Premier League victory over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
Sent in to bat after Mumbai Indians won the toss, RCB produced a batting onslaught that never relented, piling up a daunting 240 for four.
The foundations were laid by Phil Salt’s brutal 78 from 36 balls, which included six boundaries and six maximums, but it was Patidar’s captain’s knock with four fours and five sixes that turned a strong start into a near-unassailable total.
Walking in during the middle overs, Patidar went from ball one, racing to a 17-ball fifty and shredding spin and pace alike to completely seize momentum.
Virat Kohli anchored the innings with a measured 50 from 38 balls, striking five boundaries and one six, ensuring RCB never lost direction, before Tim David provided the final hammer.
David finished unbeaten on 30 from 14 balls, with two boundaries and three sixes, the third being a colossal last-ball maximum off Trent Boult (4-0-50-1) that sent RCB to a psychological 240. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Mumbai bowlers, conceding 35 runs in his four overs but going wicketless again for Mumbai.
Mumbai’s chase began bravely through South African Ryan Rickelton, who smashed 37 from 22 and briefly gave the home crowd hope, a knock that included three fours and three sixes.
Rickelton lost his opening partner Rohit Sharma through injury, retiring hurt on 19 from 13 balls. However, the turning point came when young legspinner Suyash Sharma (4-0-47-2) removed Rickelton and then Tilak Varma (1) in the same over, abruptly halting Mumbai’s early surge.

Hardik Pandya hit back with a counter-attacking 40, including six fours and a six from 22 balls, but consistent wickets kept pushing the required rate beyond reach. Krunal Pandya’s (4-0-26-1) dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav for 33 further tilted the contest firmly in RCB’s favour.
Despite late fireworks from Sherfane Rutherford, who struck an unbeaten 71 from 31 balls, including a staggering nine maximums and just one four, the asking rate had proved too steep. RCB’s bowlers held their nerve at the death, conceding boundaries but never control, as Mumbai closed on 222 for 5.
